Women's Basketball The Lady Hardrockers are making quite a bit of waves lately as they rattled off two more victories and pushed their winning streak to six in a row en route to a 7-4 overall mark. The Hardrockers defeated the Johnson and Wales Lady Wildcats, 108-30 last Friday and then earned another ‘W' Saturday with a 79-65 tilt over Colorado College. Against Johnson and Wales, South Dakota Mines ran out to an 18-2 lead to open the game and held a 54-11 edge at the half. SDM matched their 54 points in the second period, while JWU could only muster 19, earning SDM the lopsided victory. Individually, the Hardrockers saw five players reach double figures. Freshman Leah Sundby (Williston, N.D.) had a career high 31 points in the game to pace South Dakota. Fellow freshman Kayla Goshorn (Rapid City) excelled as well, netting 16 points. Junior standout Melanie Vedvei (Lake Preston) put up 15 points, Bethany Holyoak (freshman from Moorcroft, Wyo.) added 13 and Rachel O'Hara cashed in for 10. Against Colorado College, the Hardrockers took a nine-point advantage at the half, 38-29, and tacked on 41 over the next 20 minutes to grab the 79-65 win. The Lady Hardrockers again had production up and down the lineup as three athletes reached double figures. Vedvei turned on the jets for a 33-point performance. Holyoak had a double-double, putting up 11 points and coming down with 12 rebounds. Amber DeWeerd (Rock Valley, Iowa) added 14 points on the night. Men's Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines men's team had a tough go of it in their pair of weekend games, coming up just short in both outings. Friday's game saw the Hardrockers fall to the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers, 73-64, and then the JWU Wildcats outlasted SDM on Saturday, 75-70. Against Colorado Mines, South Dakota played their Division II counterparts very well for most of the game. At the half, the Hardrockers held a six-point advantage, 30-24. But the Orediggers were able to catch and overtake the visitors over the final 20 minutes and hold the edge at the free throw line late in the contest. SDM senior Brandon Fredrickson (Fort Collins) put forth a valiant effort, cashing in for 22 points including six of eight from behind the arc. Fellow senior Matt Lyndoe knocked down 14 points to help the cause converting 10-13 from the charity stripe. After the Hardrockers hung a 20-point loss on the Wildcats a week earlier during the US Bank Thanksgiving Classic, JWU had a resurgence in Saturday's game, defeating SDM, 75-70. The Wildcats were paced by Jason Davis, who knocked down 35 points to spark his team. The Hardrockers were led by senior Casey Schmitz (Williston, N.D.) with 15 points, followed by fellow senior Brandon Lord with 14. Freshman Robbie Fedor Monticello, Minn.) and Lyndoe both added eight points apiece and sophomore Brandon Smith (Amenia, N.D.) contributed with a seven-point effort. The two-game slide put the ‘Rockers at 5-5 for the season. |
