| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- With the end of the Fall Semester at South Dakota School of Mines, the men's and women's basketball teams both took to the road this past weekend to get in some competition before the Christmas Holiday. The SDM men traveled to Vermillion to square off with the University of South Dakota Coyotes while the women went to Nebraska for the Midland Lutheran College Classic. Women's Basketball The Lady Hardrockers got back to their winning ways, marking up two more impressive wins over two very tough Great Plains Conference opponents. South Dakota Mines defeated Concordia University, 100-78, followed by an impressive win against Midland Lutheran College, 75-68. The two ‘W's now gives the Rockers a 9-5 overall mark on the season. In the Concordia matchup, Mines jumped out to a 46-31 advantage in the first half of play and then outscored the Lady Bulldogs, 54-47 in the second period. The Hardrockers had outstanding offensive performance as five players reached double figures. Lake Preston native, junior Melanie Vedvei, paced South Dakota Mines with 23 points. She was followed by fellow junior Amber DeWeerd (Rock Valley, Iowa) who cashed in for 19 points, freshman Madi Hotovec (Phoenix, Ariz.) put up 18 points, freshman Bethany Holyoak (Moorcroft, Wyo.) added 17 and recorded three blocks in the game while Rapid City's own Jennie Malone (junior) contributed with 12 points. Freshman Nicole Martin (Missoula, Mont.) also did will with a seven-point effort. Things were a little tighter against the Midland Lady Warriors. The Lady Rockers led by 13 at the half, 38-25, which proved to be the difference as the visitors were able to ride out a scoring surge from Midland in the second half, putting up 43 points to SDM's 37. Vedvei again paced all scorers with another 23-point effort. She also had five steals and two blocks in the bout. DeWeerd again came up big as well, knocking down 16 points and also recorded two blocks in the game. Malone connected for 13 points and Hotovec contributed with 12 points. The Lady Hardrockers will take the holiday weekend off before preparing for a big road trip to Las Vegas for the NAIA Shootout. South Dakota Mines will take on Oklahoma Christian University and Madonna University (Mi.) Dec. 29-30. Men's Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines men's hoops team took on one their toughest opponents of its 2006-07 schedule in the University of South Dakota Coyotes. Not only are the Coyotes a NCAA Division II team, which will soon be Div. I, they also possessed a roster of talented players with excellent touch from the outside. But the Hardrockers have a pretty skilled lineup as well, and even though USD defeated the Hardrockers, 75-59, the game was still very competitive. The Coyotes established themselves early in the contest while SDM made valiant runs at different times. The Coyotes held a 43-28 lead at the half, which proved to be the difference as the Hardrockers scored 31 points in the second half to USD's 32. Another key to the outcome was at the free throw line as South Dakota converted 21-24 foul shots. Offensively things were fairly balanced for the Hardrockers. Senior Matt Lyndoe of Custer paced the Hardrocker attack with 14 points and eight rebounds, while fellow senior Casey Schmitz out of Williston, N.D., put up 13 points, and Winner's Blake Tideman (senior) cashed in for 11 points. The loss drops the Hardrockers to 6-7 on the season and they will next see action at the Perkins Classic Dec. 29-30 in Spearfish. SDM will take on Iowa schools Northwestern College and Morningside College. |
