| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- Both the South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's team posted a pair of Dakota Athletic Conference wins this past weekend at the King Center in Rapid City, giving the Hardrocker men sole possession of first place in the conference standings while the women are in a four-way tie for first place in the rankings. The four wins also gave both teams an undefeated record at home. The Lady Hardrockers are 7-0 this season when playing in Goodell Gymnasium while the men are a perfect 6-0. Men's Basketball The SDSM&T men's basketball team improved their conference record to 3-0 win wins over the Dickinson State Blue Hawks and Minot State Beavers this past Friday and Saturday at Goodell Gymnasium in Rapid City. The Hardrockers defeated the Hawks, 88-70, in Friday's outing and then outlasted a Minot State scoring surge in the second half to top the Beavers, 86-80. Against Dickinson, the Hardrockers got things established early in the first period and went into halftime up by 16 points, 56-40. The lead carried them though the second half and proved to be the difference down the stretch as Dickinson scored 30 points over the last 20 minutes to SDM's 32. The Hardrockers were very productive offensively up and down the lineup as five players reached double figures. Senior post player Casey Schmitz (Williston, N.D.) led the ‘Rockers with 19 points and eight rebounds. Senior forward Matt Lyndoe (Custer, S.D.) put up 14 points, senior guard Blake Tidemade (Winner, S.D.) cashed in for 13, senior guard Brandon Lord (Taylorsville, Utah) added 11 and freshman guard Robbie Feddor put up 10 points. Andrew Brown (Dickinson, N.D.) also contributed with nine points scored and grabbed eight rebounds. It looked as if the Minot game would go down in the same fashion as Mines opened the first half with an impressive offensive effort. At the half, the Hardrockers were up by 14 points, 49-35. The Beavers though were able to gain some momentum and as the second half started had chipped the ‘Rockers lead down to nothing. Both teams traded leads a few times to the end of the game where Mines strung together some buckets to win the game. Four Hardrockers found themselves with 10-plus points. Schmitz again led the team with 19 points and eight rebounds. His efforts also netted him DAC Player of the Week for the second time this season. Lord also had an impressive outing with 18 points, Brown came up big with 16 points while Lyndoe added 10 markers. The Hardrockers are 8-9 overall and 3-0 in the conference and are also leading the DAC standings. Mines will be on the road for the next two weeks, first traveling to Mayville, N.D. and Dakota State this weekend and then Jamestown College and Valley City State Jan. 19-20. Women's Basketball The Lady Hardrockers earned two big DAC victories over the weekend improving their conference record to 2-1 which will help keep pace in a very tight women's conference race. The Hardrockers are currently in a four-way tie with Black Hills State, Valley City State and Mayville, while the rest of the DAC are just a game back with 1-2 record. South Dakota Mines dispatched the Dickinson State Lady Blue Hawks by 22 points, 78-56 and then won in dramatic fashion over the NAIA Div. II No. 6 ranked Minot State, defeating the Beavers on a last-second shot, 71-69. In the Friday game, the Blue Hawks could do little against the ever powerful Hardrocker offensive attack. SDM jumped out to a 12-1 run and kept their foot on the gas to the end. Dickinson fell behind, 39-17 at the break. They gave a good effort in the second half, matching Mine's 39 points, but the damage was done. The Lady ��Rockers had three players in double figures. Junior Melanie Vedvei (Lake Preston, S.D.) and freshman Bethany Holyoak (Moorcroft, Wyo.) paced the home team with 15 points each while freshman Madi Hotovec (Phoenix, Ariz.) cashed in for 12. Fellow freshman Nicole Martin (Missoula, Mont.) also had a good effort with eight markers. Saturday's game was a little more intense. Minot entered the game with a 14-2 record, falling to Black Hills State the night before. It was a back and forth battle for the full 40 minutes. Every time one team would get some momentum, the other team was able to respond. South Dakota Mines held a one-point edge at the half, 33-32, and outscored Minot by one point in the second half, 38-37. With the game tied, 69-69, with under just second remaining on the clock, Holyoak took a pass from Vedvei and put up a jumper in the paint that found the back of the net and two-point lead for the Hardrockers. With just.09 ticks left, a last-ditch effort was unsuccessful for the Beavers, giving Mines a well-deserved win. Four Lady ‘Rockers reached double digits. Vedvei led the way with 23 points, followed by junior Amber DeWeerd's (Rock Valley, Iowa) 13, and both Holyoak and Hotovec chipped in for 12 point a piece. The Hardrockers are on the road the next four weeks, taking on Mayville State and Dakota State this weekend, followed by games against Valley City State and Jamestown , Jan. 19 and 20. Indoor Track The South Dakota School of Mines track team saw three individuals break or tie school records at the recent Black Hills State Indoor Track Meet in early December. Eric Voorhees, who qualified for the NAIA national tournament bettered his own mark in the weight throw, throwing the 35-pound weight a distance of 46-feet 2-inches. Voorhees is a senior from Gillette, Wyo. Chandler Caldwell tied the best indoor pole vaulting mark at South Dakota Mines. The junior from Thornton, Colorado, cleared a height of 14-6 and tied with Gabe Laber who set the mark back in 2002. Jenny Strong bettered a 10-plus year mark in the triple jump by a good six inches. The freshman from Upton, Wyo., leaped to a distance of 32-7.34. In addition to that, sophomore distance runner Colton Reid was just.09 seconds from breaking his 600-meter record of 1 minute and 25.67 seconds and Shannon Hellman was only.05 ticks from bettering her 200-meter record of 26.16. |
