| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines CHADRON, Neb. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's indoor track team traveled to Nebraska this past Friday to compete in the Chadron Eagle Twilight. The Hardrockers put forth some competitive times and it showed as several thinclads earned Top 6 finishes. "We showed some improvement this week but still have a long way to go, " said Hardrocker head track coach Jerry Schafer. The biggest highlight came from the first-place finish of Chandler Caldwell (junior for Thornton, Colo.) in the pole vault event. Caldwell cleared 15-feet to take top honors and provisionally qualified for the NAIA National Meet in March. In the process heset a new SDM school record. The old record Caldwell shared with Gabe Laber (2002) with a mark of 14-6. "Chandler Caldwell had great vaults (Friday) and didn't miss until 15-5 – which is the automatic qualifier for the national meet, " Schafer said. Sophomore Shannon Hellman also did well, taking first in the 400-meter dash, an event she had never competed in before. The Rapid City native finished in a time of 1 minute 1.76 seconds. "Hellman won the 400 running from the slowest heat, " Schafer added. Other top performances included: Eric Voorhes (senior from Gillette, Wyo.) took third in the shot put with a toss of 50-1.5 and fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 45-1.25; Kyle Kattke (junior from Black Hawk) finished third in the 3, 000, clocking a 9:28.96 while Nate Hicks (freshman from Yankton) was a spot back in fourth in a time of 9:30.89; Colton Reid (sophomore from Colstrip, MT.) earned fourth place in the mile run in a time of 4:40.82; Tyler Flattum (junior from Bristol) had a personal best in the 55 high hurdles, grabbing fourth place with a mark of 8.08 seconds; Jake Donnelly raced to a fifth-place finish in the 200 dash, with a mark of 23.44; Scott Anderson (sophomore from Huron) settled for sixth place in the 800 run, clocking a time of 2:03.93; and Jenny Strong earned sixth in the high jump, clearing a height of 4-11. Ashley Stewart (sophomore from Scotland, S.D.) also competed in the high jump. Stewart finished just out of the Top 6, clearing 4-9, and did so with a pretty nagging injury. "Ashley Stewart showed a lot of courage jumping with a sprained right ankle, " Schafer said. "Her technique over the bar really carried her (Friday)." The Hardrockers currently have two auto qualifiers in Hellman (60 hurdles) and Voorhees (shot put) along with two provisionals in Hellman (200) and Caldwell in the pole vault. The SDM team will be a little closer to home this weekend, traveling to the Dave Little Indoor Invitational, hosted by Black Hills State in Spearfish. Men's Basketball The South Dakota Men's Basketball team earned a split over the weekend hosting home Dakota Athletic Conference bouts. The Hardrockers defeated Valley City State, 60-49, Friday night, followed by a loss to Jamestown College Saturday, 90-74. In the Valley City contest, after trailing by three at the half, 28-25, South Dakota Mines outscored Valley City 35-21 over the final 20 minutes. The Hardrockers gained the momentum basically from taking the ball hard to the hoop, making it and drawing the foul. Both SDM's Casey Schmidt and Matt Lyndoe were able to drive the lane, score and convert at the foul line. "We took it to them, " Henry said. "We asked Casey and Matt to make a play and they did." A total of 45 fouls were called in the game, Valley City committing 28 and South Dakota Mines getting whistled for 17. The Hardrockers converted 24-36 attempts from the foul line while the Vikings were only good on 5-18. Individually Mines was paced by both Lyndoe and Schmitz, each cashing in for 13 points and Andrew Brown adding 10. Schmitz also came down with a game-high 10 rebounds. The Vikings were led by Jonathon Lindahl, scoring 14 points. Against Jamestown, The Hardrockers looked good in the first half, jumping out to a nine-point advantage, 44-35, but then went cold over the final 20 minutes allowing Jamestown to capitalize on the scoring drought. It didn't help that the Jimmies were shooting just under 60 percent from the field for the game. The Hardrockers ended the first half shooting 63 percent but then in the second half was 27 percent from the field. The game was of the physical nature Saturday night as a total of 59 fouls were committed. Jamestown was able to convert 25-37 while Mines was 20-31 from the line. Individually, Jamestown's Lawrence Brooks had a big night with 23 points scored while teammate Jake Holen contributed with 20 markers and Kyle Iverson dished in 14. For the Hardrockers Brandon Lord led the team with 19 points, followed by 11 from Casey Schmitz and 10 from Blake Tideman. The loss gives the ‘Rockers a 10-13 overall record and a 5-4 mark in the DAC. Women's Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team earned a split in Dakota Athletic Conference action this past weekend at home, defeating Valley City, 76-68, Friday before falling short to Jamestown College, 68-60. In Friday's game, the Lady Hardrockers had to endure a sluggish first half where the offense was slow and the turnovers plentiful. "There is only one word to describe the first half --- ugly, " said Hardrocker head coach Barb Felderman. The game was pretty even through the early goings with SDM taking a five-point edge at the half, 28-25. The second period saw the Hardrockers instill full-court pressure that took the Vikings off guard which was a big difference in the game. Individually, Hardrocker junior Jennie Malone pace the team with a 20-point effort as well as four steals. The other two juniors, Melanie Vedvei and Amber Deweerd also shined in the Friday's victory. Vedvei recorded a double-double with 15 points scored and 11 rebounds grabbed. She also had six steals on the night. Deweerd notched 18 points in the game. Against the Jimmies, the Lady Hardrockers put forth a great effort, fighting tooth and nail, but fell short of a very determined Jamestown College Lady Jimmies team. Trailing for most of the game, the Lady Hardrockers were able to gain some momentum midway through the second half, and after falling behind by as much as 14 points, chopped the deficit down to nothing with about 10 minutes remaining in the game. Jamestown then lit it up from the outside, sinking some key three-point goals, which Mines did not have the answer for at the other end. The ‘Rocker kept fighting, making it interesting until the very end of play but just could not get over the hump. The Jimmies looked sharp from the outside, cashing in on seven of 11 from behind the arc while SDM converted seven of 17. The Hardrockers were paced by junior Amber Deweerd, who dished in 17 points while fellow juniors Melanie Vedvei and Jennie Malone both put up 12 points. The loss gives South Dakota Mines a 14-9 overall record and 4-5 mark in the DAC. |
