TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team defeated the Valley City State Lady Vikings, 76-68, Friday night in Dakota Athletic Conference play at Goodell Gymnasium in Rapid City and improved its overall record to 14-8 on the season (4-4 in DAC). The Lady Hardrockers had to endure a sluggish first half where the offense was slow and the turnovers plentiful. "There is only one word to describe the first half --- ugly, " said Hardrocker head coach Barb Felderman. The game was pretty even through the early goings with SDM taking a five-point edge at the half, 28-25. The second period saw the Hardrockers instill full-court pressure that took the Vikings off guard which was a big difference in the game. The Hardrockers tallied 12 steals on the night and were able to convert a majority of those turnovers into points, giving the home team as much as a 10-point lead down the stretch. Mines was able to ride out several runs by Valley City and earn the much needed conference win. Individually, Hardrocker junior Jennie Malone pace the team with a 20-point effort as well as four steals. The other two juniors, Melanie Vedvei and Amber Deweerd also shined in the Friday's victory. Vedvei recorded a double-double with 15 points scored and 11 rebounds grabbed. She also had six steals on the night. Deweerd notched 18 points in the game. The Vikings were led by the DAC player of the week Mallory Undlin who netted 20 points. Senior standout Loni Hall also did well with a 16-point performance. The loss gives Valley City a 4-4 record in the DAC along with Mines, Black Hills State and Minot State (all tied for third). The ‘Rockers welcome Jamestown today in a 4 p.m. bout at the King Center
