| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines VERMILLION --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's track teams were well represented in an extremely competitive field during the Graphic's Edge Indoor Track Meet this past Saturday at the DakotaDome in Vermillion. "They kids competed very hard, " said Hardrocker head track coach Jerry Schafer. "It was a big meet with lots of teams threre. It was very competitive." On the women's side, sophomore Shannon Hellman had an outstanding meet, taking first in the women's 60-meter high hurdles. The Rapid City native clocked a time of 8.80 seconds in the finals to win the event over the University of South Dakota's Lindsay House (9.08). Hellman had an 8.84 in the preliminaries. Hellman had already qualified for the event earlier in the season, currently holding the fasted time in the nation with an 8.75. Hellman also competed in the 60 dash Saturday, taking sixth in the prelims with an 8.11. She did not run in the finals of that event. Jenny Strong, a freshman from Upton, Wyo., cleared a height of 5-feet-2-inches and secured sixth place during the high jump. Two other freshmen also posted some good results as Katrina Donovan (Martin, S.D.) took 15th in the shot put after a throw of 34-11 and Samantha Deide (Huron) finished ninth in the 1, 000 run with a mark of 3:32.18. She is also the first Lady Hardrocker to post a time in the race, giving her the school record. On the men's side, Jake Donnelly, a senior from Elk Point, raced to a fifth-place finish in the 60 dash in a time of 7.20. He was sixth in the prelims, crossing the finish line in a time of 7.24. The 200 dash saw Colin Royer (junior from Ft. Pierre) take 15th with a 23.78, Jason Simmons (freshman from New Underwood) fininsh 17th in 24.05 and Dustin Jordan (freshman from Pierre) settle for 29th with a mark of 25.30. Jordan also competed in the 500 run, where he took eighth in a time of 1:11.66. In the distance events, Nate Hick (freshman out of Utica, S.D.) and Kyle Kattke (junior from Black Hawk) had very comparable times. In the mile run Hick was able to secure 16th place with a mark of 4:46.62 while Kattke was two spots back in 18th in a time of 4:47.69. In the 3, 000 however, it was Kattke that had the faster time, taking 15th and posting a 9:32.96 while Hick was three places back in 18th with a 9:35.89. Junior Tyler Flattum, from Bristol, came up just short of making the finals in the 60 high hurdles. With the finals made up of the top eight in the event, Flattum came in ninth, clocking a 8.82 and missed out on running the race again by two one-hundreths of a second. Pole vaulter Chandler Caldwell. continues his quest to reach the NAIA meet. Saturday saw the Thornton, Colo. native earn sole possession of third place in Vermillion as he tied his own school record after clearing 14-6. The automatic qualification in the event is 15-6 while the provisional qualifying standard is 15-0. Caldwell has the potential to reach that height as well as the determination. In the throwing events, Eric Voorhees, a senior from Gillette, Wyo., who is already auto-qualified in the shot put, took third in the event in Vermillion, posting a distance of 48-10.25. Freshman Matt Deardorff also competed in the event, taking 12th with a mark of 43-00.50. In the weight throw, Voorhees had a distance of 42-08.75 for 12th spot. "We competed hard, but we didn't show a lot of improvement from the first meet season, but we didn't lose anything either, " Shafer said. Saturday's meet was the first time in over a month that the Hardrockers had been in competition. Next up, the Hardrockers head to Nebraska Friday for the Chadron State Eagle Twilight Indoor Meet. Women's Basketball The Lady Hardrocker basketball team got a much needed win this past weekend, splitting on a road trip to North Dakota. The SDM ladies fell to Jamestown College, 63-53, Friday, but rebounded nicely to down the Valley City Lady Vikings, 75-67, Saturday. Against the Jimmies, the ‘Rockers were up by two at the half, 29-27, but were outscored down the stretch, as Jamestown posted 36 second-half points to SDM's 25. The Hardrockers again had trouble making the ball go in the hoop posting a shooting percentage of 32 for the game. Freshman post player Bethany Holyoak (Moorcroft, Wyo.) led the scoring attack for Mines with 14 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, while junior guard Melanie Vedvei (Lake Preston) contributed with 11 points and had five boards. The Hardrockers were finally able to break out of their funk against the Vikings. After trailing by six at the half, 36-30, Mines rattled off 45 second-half points, outscoring the home team, 45-31, to earn the much needed Dakota Athletic Conference victory. Vedvei came through in a big way for the visitors, with an impressive double-double. The junior industrial engineering major posted a game-high 29 points as well as securing 11 rebounds to aid in the win. She also had six steels in the game. Three other Hardrockers reached double figures as well. Holyoak put forth a good effort with 16 points, followed by Amber DeWeerd (junior from Rock Rapids, Iowa), who had 14 points, and Rapid City's Jennie Malone dished in 13. With the split, the Hardrockers are 13-8 on the season and 3-4 in conference play, which puts them in a tied with Black Hills State for fifth place. South Dakota Mines get the next four game at home. First up will be the teams they just faced in Valley City State and Jamestown College. Men's Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team came up just short this past weekend, dropping two Dakota Athletic Conference games to Jamestown College and Valley City State on a road trip to North Dakota. The defeats also knocked the Hardrockers off the top of the conference ranks and are now currently in third place in the DAC standings with a 9-12 record (4-3 in DAC). The Jimmies, who pretty much were in a "must win situation" heading into the weekend, were able to handle the Hardrockers, 72-53. Jamestown exploded for 42 first-half points to Mines 27 and then cruised over the final 20 minutes to earn the ‘W'. The Hardrockers had just one player reach double figures as senior Brandon Fredrickson (Ft. Collins, Colo.) cashed in for 17 points. Fellow senior Blake Tideman (Winner) and junior Andrew Brown (Dickinson, N.D.) both contributed with eight points. Saturday's outing saw a sea-saw battle between the two top teams in the league (heading into the weekend). And it was a game deserving of top billing. The ‘Rockers nearly had it, but a long-range last-second shot was off the mark and Mines fell to the Vikings, 73-70. The Vikings had opportunities to pull away, but a determined Mines squad kept narrowing the gap. Valley City led by nine at the half, 36-27, while the Hardrockers outscored the home team in the second period, 43-37. The Vikings did just enough to pull ahead and take over first place in the conference by themselves. South Dakota Mines had a much better offensive performance Saturday. Senior Brandon Lord paced the Hardrockers with 18 points, followed by Fredrickson and Matt Lyndoe (senior from Custer) who both chipped in 11 points. The Hardrockers won't have to wait long to get another crack at the Vikings as Valley City and Jamestown will be in town this weekend to start the second half of the DAC schedule. |
