| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's basketball team went back on the road this past weekend for Dakota Athletic Conference action. The Lady Hardrockers had a tough go of it falling short in both their outings while the SDM men's team retained their status at the top of the conference standings splitting the road games. Men's Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines travel to North Dakota last Friday to square off with a very good Mayville State Comets squad. The Hardrockers played well but a late run by the Comets pushed the home team over the edge and to an 81-68 tilt. Saturday's DAC matchup had the ‘Rockers back in South Dakota, taking on the Dakota State Trojans, where they were able salvage the weekend with an 89-80 victory. The split gives the Hardrockers a 4-1 DAC record (9-10 overall) and a tie for first place in the conference, sharing with Valley City State. In the Mayville game, SDM trailed by just one point at the half, 35-34, but was outscored 46-34 over the final 20 minutes. The Hardrockers saw only one player reach double figures as senior Matt Lyndoe (Custer, S.D.) paced the way with 13 points. Robbie Feddor (freshman from Monticello, Minn.) chipped in nine points and junior Andrew Brown (Dickinson, N.D) contributed with eight points and was the team's leading rebounder with six. In Saturday's game, the game was again tight at the half with Mines up by one, 41-40. A late run gave the visitors an eight-point edge in the second half as well as the win, outscoring the Trojans, 48-40. The Hardrockers had a much better night offensively as four SDM players were in double digits. Senior Brandon Fredrickson (Fort Collins, Colo.) had an outstanding game, cashing in for 24 points, while Casey Schmitz (senior from Williston, N.D.) had 14 points, Brown put up 12 and Brandon Smith (Amena, N.D.) contributed with 10 points. The Hardrockers are back on the road this weekend with stops in Valley City and Jamestown. Women's Basketball After an impressive home stand to open the New Year in which they found themselves ranked 23rd in the NAIA, the Lady Hardrockers took it on the chin this past weekend with a loss Friday to Mayville State, 74-57. Saturday's game against Dakota State didn't net any better results as the Hardrockers fell to Dakota State, 76-64. Against Mayville, poor shooting was a big factor in the loss as the Hardrockers had just under 30 percent for the game. Mayville State took a 40-25 halftime lead that pretty much sealed the Hardrockers' fate. Junior Amber DeWeerd (Rock Valley, Iowa) paced the Mines team with 16 points, while junior Jennie Malone (Rapid City, S.D.) added 12 and Melanie Vedvei (Lake Preston, S.D.) put up 11 points and had the team's most rebounds with eight. In the Dakota State game, the shooting woes continued for the Lady ‘Rockers, shooting 37 percent against the Lady ‘T's. Dakota State took a 38-27 halftime lead which, just like the previous night, proved to be the difference in the game. Vedvei got back on track with a 24-point performance and Malone came through wit h15 points. Nicole Martin (freshman from Missoula, Mont.) collected the most rebounds with seven. The two losses give the Hardrockers a 2-3 mark in the DAC and an overall record of 12-7. The women will travel to North Dakota this weekend to square off with Jamestown College and Valley City State. |
