Mines varsity blanks alumni By Padraic Duffy, Journal staff | Saturday, April 25, 2009 RAPID CITY — The South Dakota School of Mines football team forced seven turnovers Saturday at O'Harra Stadium on its way to a 28-0 defeat of the South Dakota Mines alumni team at the annual spring alumni game. "This is a time where there are a lot of opportunities to enjoy the alumni and the association with the school, No. 1 and No. 2, it's a chance to get out and play some football and hit somebody other than our own players, " Mines head coach Dan Kratzer said. "The kids got that experience and we're getting more and more young alumni coming back to play, which really helps us." One player who isn't all that young anymore is 40-year-old linebacker Ron Williams. The 1992 graduate has been playing on the alumni team since graduating, and he and the rest of the defense played admirably. But they simply wore down against the younger, deeper varsity. The turnovers didn't help any either. "I've been playing in this game ever since I graduated except for about four or five that I've had to miss, " Williams said. "It was a blast and it's always a blast. I live for this once a year. I mean, there's not too many guys who played football who get to say that they played a game when they were 40 years old. I'm going to keep playing as long as I can. As long as (1984 graduate) Lance Mriden is playing, I'll keep playing too." Mines' varsity capitalized on a couple of fumbles deep in alumni territory in the first half to take a 14-0 lead into the locker room at the half on touchdown runs by Jamie Dale and Colen Kling. It was the second year in a row that the Mines varsity shut out the alumni team. The varsity won the 2008 game, 23-0. The alumni team struggled on offense much of the day as it was forced to play a former free safety (Bob Pentland) and tight end (Rob Lyke) at quarterback. The duo finished the game a combined 6-for-19 with five interceptions. On the other hand, Mines starter Nick Russell finished the game 15-for-24 for 172 yards with a 21-yard touchdown strike to tight end Jason Beilstein. |
