TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team had another top-notch performance Saturday night at the King Center in Rapid City, by defeating the NAIA No. 18th ranked team as well as the Dakota Athletic Conference's No. 1 team in the Mayville State Comets, 78-72. "It was Parents' Night (Saturday) and to get back-to-back wins at home was a big deal for us, " said Hardrocker head coach Jason Henry said also referring to the drupping the Hardrockers gave Dakota State a night earlier (102-57). "It was great for us to win against a ranked team in front of the parents." After pretty much a tug-of-war battle throughout the game, the Hardrockers were able to put some distance between them and the Comets when SDM senior Brandon Fredrickson hit four unanswered points with about three minutes to play to give his team a 74-70 advantage. From there, the ‘Rocker whittled the time down, forcing Mayville to foul and send Mines to the charity stripe where they converted 4-6 in the last minute and a half. Mayville State got on top early, running out to a sizable lead, but the Hardrocker were able to regroup, fight back and make a game of it. At the half the bout was tied at 39-39. Again in the second half, Mayville charged out to get the early advantage having a 10-point lead with just over 10 minutes to play, 55-45, but just like the first half, the Hardrockers fought back, and were able to even things up at 60-60 with four minutes to play, which set up the dramatic ending. The Comets' leading scorer was Monty Rogers who netted 20 markers. Teammate Tremel Gilot put up 15 points, Andy Parochka had 12 and Marques Benjamin added 10 for the visitors. The Hardrockers had three players in double figures. Senior Casey Schmitz had 15 points in the game and if not for a couple of missed free throws at the end of the very end, the 6-foot-7-inch post player from Williston, N.D., would have tallied his 1, 000 point as a Hardrocker. Fellow senior Brandon Lord led SDM with 17 points and Matt Lyndoe added 13 for the home team. "It was coach (Eric) Glen's scouting report that really helped us out, " Henry added. We were able to do some different things (as far as game plan) that our kids responded very well to." With the weekend sweep, the SDM men improve their conference record to 7-4 (12-13 overall) while the Comets slip to 8-3 in the conference and 17-8 for the season.
