| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's basketball teams had a stellar end to their home stand this past weekend sweeping all four games in Dakota Athletic Conference play. The women's team handily defeated the league co-leaders while the men's team also knocked off the conference leader in one game and recorded a blow-out victory in the other. The SDSMT indoor track team also competed, running up to Spearfish to compete in the Dave Little Invite at Black Hills State. Men's basketball The South Dakota School of Mines men's hoops squad was firing on all cylinders Friday night as the Hardrockers routed the Dakota State Trojans, 102-57, in Dakota Athletic Conference action at the King Center in Rapid City. The Trojans held a 9-2 edge to open the game, but the Hardrockers soon took over and led by 11 at the half, 39-28. But the second period is where the ‘Rockers really shined, outscoring the visitors 63-29. SDM shot 63 percent from the field in the second half and 57 percent for the entire 40 minutes. Six South Dakota Mines athletes reached double figures as sophomore Brandon Smith (Amenia, N.D.) paced the team with 17 points which included three dunks. Both junior Andrew Brown (Dickinson, N.D.) and sophomore Donny DeGooyer had 11 points, while seniors Brandon Lord (Taylorsville, Utah), Blake Tideman (Winner, S.D.) and Brandon Fredrickson (Ft. Collins) all contributed with 10 points. Saturday's bout was much more competitive as it proved to be a game of swings and lead changes. In the end, the Hardrockers were able to string some points together down the stretch, gain the upper hand and ride out the win, defeating Mayville State, 78-72. Lord had another big night for South Dakota Mines, leading the team with 17 markers, followed by Casey Schmitz's (Williston, N.D.) 15 points and Matt Lyndoe's (Custer, S.D.) 13. The two wins give the Hardrockers 12-13 overall record and a tie for second place with Jamestown College and Valley City with a 7-4 DAC mark. Next up the men will take one last regular season road trip to North Dakota, facing Minot State and Dickinson State this weekend. Women's Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team kept the Dakota Athletic Conference title in sight this past weekend after recording a pair of impressive wins over the league's co-leaders in the Mayville State Comets and Dakota State Trojans. The Lady Hardrockers defeated Dakota State, 74-69, in Friday's outing. The SDM women started out strong, holding a 20-point edge at the half, 45-25. Dakota State rallied in the second period, but the Hardrockers were able to stave them off to earn the much needed win. The Hardrockers were led by junior Jennie Malone (Rapid City, S.D.) and Freshman Bethany Holyoak, who each cashed in for 18 points. Junior Melanie Vedvei (Lake Preston, S.D.) contributed with 11 points and junior Amber DeWeerd had 10 markers on the night. Mines kept its offensive intensity against Mayville State on Saturday, taking the lead from the tip-off and never looking back, winning the contest, 96-71. The Hardrockers led by 25 at the half, 55-30 and at one point in the second period, were up by 33 points. Both teams put up 41 points in the second half. Vedvei scored a game-high 23 points while Holyoak put up 18 for the second consecutive night. The 6-foot freshman also notched 14 rebounds for a double double and record four blocks on the night. Her efforts over the weekend earned her the DAC Player of the week. Fellow freshman Madi Hotovec scored 16 points in the game while both Malone and DeWeerd put up 14. The two wins give SDM a 16-9 overall record and a 6-5 mark in the DAC which puts them in a tie with Black Hills State for fourth place. The Lady ‘Rockers head to North Dakota this weekend for DAC games against Minot State and Dickinson State. Indoor Track The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's indoor track teams didn't have far to travel this past weekend heading up to Spearfish for the Dave Little Invite at Black Hills State. Individually, sophomore Shannon Hellman (Rapid City) automatically qualified for the NAIA National Meet after placing second during the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.96 seconds. Hellman is already qualified in the 55 high hurdles. Hellman won the 55 hurdles Saturday, taking first in the prelims with a mark of 8.24 and then clocked the fasted time in the finals with an 8.17. In other women's events, both sophomore Ashley Stewart (Scotland, S.D.) and freshman Jenny Strong (Upton, Wyo.) tied for third place in the high jump as each cleared 4-feet-1.75 inches; and Katrina Donovan took eighth place in the shot put with a toss of 33-1.25. For the men, senior Jake Donnelly (Elk Point) earned a provisional mark in the 200 dash, taking third at Saturday's meet, clocking a 22.58. Other men's highlights include: Colton Reid (Colstrip, Mont.) and Shane Hague finishing 1-2 in the 800 run. Reid had a time of 1:58.94 while Hague was just a tick off with a 1:59.93; junior Kyle Kattke placed sixth in the 5, 000 run (16:22.30) while teammate Nate Hicks (Utica, S.D.) was a spot back in seventh (16:43.82); Tyler Flattum had fine day in the 55 hurdles, clocking a time of 8.13 in the prelims for fifth place and then earned the same position in the finals after a time of 8.14 which was also good enough for a provisional to the NAIA meet; junior Chandler Caldwell (Thorton, Colo.) finished third in the pole vault, matching his provisional height from last week at 15 feet; and Eric Voorhees was a double placer in the weight events, grabbing fifth in the shot put after throw of 50-7.25 and then taking sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 45-3.75. The Hardrocker thinclads head to Nebraska this weekend for the Chadron Indoor Invite on Saturday. |
