| Transcript | Updated……….Updated………���…Updated………… By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines ROCKLIN, CALIF. --- The South Dakota School of Mines continues its strong play as the 2007 season gets underway as the Lady Hardrockers extended their winning streak to 7-0 after winning three matches Friday at the William Jessup University Shootout in Rocklin California. SDM made short work of Northwestern Christian College (Eugene, Ore.), Menlo College (Atherton, Calif.) and Benedictine University (Achinson, Kan.) The Lady Hardrockers defeated NCC 30-28, 30-10, 30-19. "They are a new program that hasn't been established yet, " said Hardrocker head coach Beth Honaker. "And we knew that going in. We played really well as a team and everyone got a chance to compete." Game 1 was the closest in the match for the Hardrockers, winning by just two points. Honaker said that the time it took to travel out to California as well as the time of the first match (8 a.m.) may have played a factor. "We just weren't away in Game 1, " Honaker said. "After that we got on a role." Rapid City native Jennie Malone (senior) had a stellar day for the ‘Rockers, going 13-15 on the attack and collecting 10 kills while teammate Katherine Hanson (sophomore from Sioux Falls) had nine kills and was 13-16 on the attack. The Hardrockers then faced a tough Menlo College team where SDM defeated the Oaks, 31-29, 30-26, 30-27. Menlo has been the California Pacific Conference champions for the last three years. "They are like the conference champ every year out here.They are good defenders and have very good ball control, " Honaker said. "We struggled right away. This is a different atomosphere out here and after the girls adjusted, we played really well." Malone again stepped up in the match recording 10 kills and was 14-15 on the attack. Transfer student Ashley Kauffman (junior from Fort Morgan, Colo, ) also had 10 kills in the bout. "Jennie Malone is playing really well, ���� Honaker said. She is serving really well, making smart hits and has kind of become the ‘go-to' hitter for Tessa Howe (SDM setter)." In their mosted tested match of the season, it took five games to crown a winner, but the Hardrockers kept their win-streak in take defeating Benedictine College, 22-30, 30-22, 30-19, 28-30, 15-13. Kaufman showed her assertiveness with 16 kills while making good on 55-46 attacks. Malone also had a fine match with 11 kills going 17-17 on the attack. Jenny Hiykel had 25 digs in the contest and Howe collected 45 assits. The Hardrockers will continue play today squaring off with Baker College (Kansas) and the host school William and Jessup (Rocklin). South Dakota School of Mines def.
