TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines BILLINGS, MONT. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team started the 2007 season off with a bang, collecting a 4-0 record over the weekend at the Rocky Mountain College Shootout Volleyball Tournament in Billings, Mont. The Lady Hardrockers faced four teams from the Frontier Conference, posting 3-0 scores in three of the matches. In fact, the ‘Rockers were 8-1 in games played at the Montana tourney, making it one of the strongest starts for SDM in the past few years. "It's always nice to start the season off with a good record, " said Hardrocker head coach Beth Honaker. "We didn't only win, we also made great strides in difficult game situations." During Friday's matches, the Hardrockers made short work of Montana Western, 30-20, 30-12, 30-16, and then took out the host school, Rocky Mountain Collage, 30-24, 30-26, 30-17. In Saturday's bouts, SDM defeated Montana Tech 30-19, 30-27, 28-30, 30-21 and ended the tournament with a victory over Montana State Northern, 30-28, 30-23, 30-24. "We showed a lot of maturity going into the weekend not knowing a whole lot about the other teams, " Honaker said. "But that helped us concentrate on what we were doing on our side of the net and not be concerned with what the other teams were going to do." The Hardrockers tallied 163 kills over the weekend, 20 aces and a whopping 39 blocks. After four matches, new transfer Ashley Kauffman (Fort Morgan, Colo.) leads the team in kills with 47, while Rapid City native Jennie Malone (senior) tallied 37. Setter Tessa Howe, junior from Omaha, Neb., is on pace to have another impressive season with 141 assists, averaging 10.85 a game and libero Jenny Hiykel impressed from the back row with 70 digs. She averaged 5.83 a game. Kauffman also shined defensively at the net, collecting nine blocks while sophomore Katherine Hanson (Sioux Falls) grabbed seven and freshman Paige Corcoran came up with five blocks. "We are really playing our game right now, " Honaker said. "I hope this will set the tone for the rest of the season." The Hardrockers are back on the road this weekend, traveling to California for the William Jessup University Warrior Classic Volleyball Tournament. SDM will have matches against the host school, along with Northwest Christian (Calif.), Menlo College (Calif.), Benedictine College (Kan.) and Baker College (Kan.) Hardrocker Statistics SDM def.
