TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines volleyball team along with Lady Hardrocker head coach Beth Honaker is pleased to announce the addition of new recruits: Ashley Kauffman (Ft. Morgan, Colo.), Karina Garber (Torrington, Wyo.), Mandi Veldkamp (Dell Rapids, S.D.), Nicole Markoff (Arvada, Colo.) and Paige Corcoran (Pierre, S.D.) to the SDM program for the 2007 season. Kauffman comes to the team with the most experience as a transfer student from Northeastern Junior College in Sterling Colorado. In Kauffman's two-year career at NJC, she totaled 498 kills and 174 blocks. She was also a very strong back row player with 321 digs. "Ashley is expected to be a very big offensive threat in our system, " Honaker said. "She brings a lot of experience and she is coming from a successful program. I think she will be good for our younger girls where success is still new. She also has a lot of leadership qualities." Garber comes to SDM to add some depth in the front. She is a solid front-row player and in her high school career, she recorded 198 kills, 212 blocks and 81 digs. Garber also had a serving percentage of 91 and was.235 on hitting efficiency. "Karina probably has one of the best noses for the ball in the front row, " Honaker said. "She will do very well on defense. I also think she could succeed in any of the front row positions." Veldkamp is coming out of a strong East River program and should bring some versatility to the Hardrocker team. During her senior season Veldkamp had 44 solo blocks, and was 50 of 68 on attacks with 44 kills. She's also a top-notch student earning Academic All State honors as a senior. She was also an All Conference Honorable Mention candidate in 2006 and earned the Practice Player Award from her team in 2005 and 2006. "I like Mandy's intensity that she brings, " Honaker said. "She has the potential to be one of the best blockers on our team. I am expecting great things from Mandy. Her ceiling is very high." Following in her sister's footsteps (Jennifer Markoff who is a senior setter on the Lady Hardrocker volleyball team), Nicole will reinforce the SDM lineup. She is a well-rounded athlete who, in high school, participated in varsity volleyball, varsity basketball, club volleyball and club basketball. She is also developing her leadership skills volunteering for various basketball camps. "We are looking for Nicole to bring depth to the outside hitting position. She is good in transition and is capable of hitting a very heavy ball, " Honaker said. "It is also nice to have a set of sisters on the team. It brings a sense of team unity." The final Mines recruit also comes from a storied volleyball program. Corcoran is a talented athlete that will be a welcome addition to the Lady Hardrocker volleyball program. At the conclusion of her senior season, the Lady Gov had racked up 233 kills and had 55 total blocks. For her efforts she received the Coaches Award, and was named the Academic All-State team for volleyball and also earned ESD All Conference Honorable Mention for the second consecutive year. In 2004 she earned the Workhorse Award from her varsity team. "Paige brings a lot to the table both on offense and defense. She is very good at anticipating plays and makes good decisions, " Honaker said. "She is a high intensity player. Her enthusiasm paired with her athletic ability could just be enough to bring the Hardrockers to the next level." The Hardrockers, who earned a berth into the Dakota Athletic Conference tournament for the first time in four years will start their 2007 campaign Aug. 25 at a tournament in Billings, Mont. SDM did not lose any players and look poised for an even better season this time around.
