| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines MADISON --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's track teams took a small core of Hardrockers to the Dakota State Last Chance Qualifier Sunday in Madison in hopes of improving times for the NAIA National Meet to be held May 24-26 in Fresno, Calif. Overall, the Hardrockers were represented well despite it being a rather small meet. SDM took home five first-place event titles. "Considering that the competition was a little sparse and it was a small meet, our kids rose to the challenge, " said assistant Hardrocker track coach Beth Honaker. SDM sophomore Shannon Hellman secured first in both the 100-meter hurdles and the 400 dash Sunday, winning the 100 hurdles with a mark of 14.34 seconds and then clocked a time of 1 minute 3.20 seconds to win the 400. Senior Jake Donnelly powered his way to a first-place showing in the men's 400 run, finishing in a time of 49.79, defeating teammates Colin Royer, who took second (50.76) and Mark Wager, who was third (52.26). Sophomore Colton Reid, who was hoping for a quick mark in the 800 run, fell a couple of seconds short but still managed to earn top honors Sunday, clocking a time of 1:57.26. Hardrocker junior Rob Hahn, who has really been coming on as of late, put forth an excellent effort at Sunday's meet finishing first in the 1, 500 run with a time of 4:12.44. "Our athletes didn't have their best performances of the season, but with the hunger in these types of athletes, it will make them compete that much harder at nationals, " Honaker said. With the regular season over for the Hardrocker thinclads, six SDM thinclads have qualified for Nationals. They will spend the next week preparing for the national meet. Men's Basketball RAPID CITY – The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball program and Hardrocker head coach Jason Henry are pleased to announce the signing new recruit Tanner Friesen to the 2007-08 team. Friesen is a 6-foot-3-inch shooting guard from Bismarck, N.D., who played for the Shiloh Christian School Skyhawks in Bismarck. "Tanner is a good shooter, " Henry said. "He led his team in shooting, which didn't have a lot of upperclassmen, so he is also a good leader on a team that made the state tournament (last year)." At the end of his senior year, Friesen average 21 points and 13 rebounds a game and was shooting 46 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free throw line. Friesen was named to his all district, all region and all state teams. During his senior year, Friesen broke the school's rebounding record of 25 (in a single game) and also scored 35 points in the same game. "He is a great shooting guard, " Henry said. "But he will have to get stronger. He is skilled now and can score the ball, but you can always get quicker and stronger." Friesen participated in the state tournament three out of the four years of his high school career. At the 2007 state tourney, Friesen led all participants in individual scoring, rebounding and free throw percentage and was a unanimous selection to the All-State Tournament Team. He also served as captain of the basketball team both his junior and senior season and was also a captain of the soccer and baseball teams as well as a student council officer. Friesen plans to major in Mining engineering while attending class at South Dakota Mines. The Hardrockers are coming off a competitive season that had them finish second in a very difficult Dakota Athletic Conference. They made a nice run in the postseason as well as making an appearance in the DAC tournament title game. They yielded to the eventual NAIA National Runners-up in the Mayville State Comets. Volleyball RAPID CITY ---- The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team will be holding three specialized camps June 11-14 at the King Center in Rapid City for girls in grades second through 12th. A skills camp will be held all four days from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., split into three age categories; a setter/hitter camp will be held June 11 and 12 from 1-5 pm. For those in grades 7-12; and a libero/defense camp will take place June 13 and 14 from 1-5 p.m. also for grades 7-12. The skills camp is $50 per camper, while the setter/hitter and libero/defense camps are an additional $40 per person. The deadline to register is June 2 and the registration fee includes a camp T-shirt.
