TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines track and field teams have eight athletes ranked in the NAIA's Top 20. The Hardrockers are automatically qualified in three events and are provisionally qualified in four for the national outdoor track meet, which will be held May 24-26 in Fresno Calif. National Indoor 60-meter hurdle champion Shannon Hellman, a sophomore from Rapid City, holds the second fastest time in the 100 hurdles, posting 14.14 seconds. She also has the ninth best time in the 400 hurdles, clocking a time of 1 minute 3.97 seconds. She is automatically qualified in both events and made the trip to the national outdoor meet last year. The other auto qualifier is Jake Donnelly, a senior from Elk Point. Donnelly has the 16th fastest time in the nation for the 200 dash. His best mark of the season was clocked at 21.65. He is also provisionally qualified in the 100 dash. His time of 10.75 currently puts him in 20th place. Donnelly is an indoor All American in the 200 and also was at the NAIA Outdoor Meet last year. SDM senior Eric Voorhees, who performed at the NAIA indoor meet this year, has a provisional mark in the shot put. His throw of 50-feet-4.5-inches is the 17th best in the NAIA so far. Hardrocker junior Chandler Caldwell, who too was a competitor at the NAIA Indoor Meet back in March, is currently ninth in the nation in the pole vault after clearing a height of 15-7. The 4x400 relay team, made up of Colin Royer, Donnelly, Colton Reid and Mark Wager have the 12th fastest time in the nation for that event with a time of 3:18.36. The team is less then a second for earning an automatic berth. The SDM Hardrocker teams travel to Madison Friday, for the Dakota State Meet.
