| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's track and field teams proved they could compete at the top collegiate level, taking part in the Colorado State Jack Christianson Invitational this past weekend in Ft. Collins, Colo. The Hardrockers were well represented in all the events and competed hard against NCAA Div. I opponents (Wyoming, Air Force and Colorado State) earning several places throughout the day. Hardrocker junior Chandler Caldwell had the most success as the Thornton, Colo., native won the pole vault after clearing 15-feet-7-inches. "He had a couple good attempts at 16-3 as well, " said Hardrocker head track coach Jerry Schafer. "It was his best vault of the season and he broke his own school record as well." Caldwell's old record was set earlier in the season at 15-5. Caldwell was already provisionally qualified for the NAIA National Meet and with the new height, moved up the rankings. The automatic qualifier is 15-9. SDSMT senior Jake Donnelly (Elk Point, S.D.) met an automatic qualification in the 200-meter dash, clocking a time of 21.65 seconds for third place in the event. Donnelly matched his personal best time in the event as well, which he set at the national track meet last year. "It's encouraging to see that Jake is running ahead of where he was last year, " Schafer said. Donnelly also did well in the 100 dash, taking fourth place in a time of 10.74 which was a provisional mark. Lady ‘Rocker Shannon Hellman placed in three events Saturday, taking seventh in both the 100 (12.81) and 200 (25.99) dashes and then grabbed sixth in the 100 (14.42) high hurdles. "Saturday was the first time this season that we ran Shannon in the 100 and 200 races, " Schafer added. "We just wanted to see how she would do." The SDM men's 4x400 relay team also proved to be competitive, taking second in the event in a time of 3:19.85. The squad consists of Colin Royer (Ft. Pierre, S.D.), Mark Wager (Gettysburg, S.D.) Donnelly and Colton Reid (Colstrip, Mont.). That group provisionally qualified for Nationals earlier this season and is very close to autoing in the event. Reid, who won the 800 last week at the BHSU meet, also held his own with the Division I opposition. This time out, the sophomore took eighth with a mark of 1:55.62. In other Hardrocker highlights, Scott Anderson (Huron, S.D.) Wager, Royer and Tyler Flattum (Bristol, S.D.) all had season best times. Anderson competed in the 800, where he had a time of 2:01.36, Wager clocked a 50.58 in the 400 dash for 10th place, Royer was 11th in the same race with a 50.84 and Flattum took ninth in the 110 hurdles with a 15.48; and Matt Deardoff (Brandon, S.D.) had a personal best throw in the discus with a toss of 140-5 for 16th place. Schafer also had good things to say about his steeplechase competitors Nate Hicks, Marcus Moor and Samantha Diede admiring the thinclads' efforts. The coach also was impressed with his female thrower Katrina Donovan (Martin, S.D.), who was entered in the shot put (12th, 33-4.5) and the discus (17th 111-8) and had good things. The Hardrockers have added another meet this weekend before the conference meet. The SDM teams will travel to Dakota State in Madison, S.D., Friday. Men's Basketball RAPID CITY --- South Dakota School of Mines men's head basketball coach Jason Henry is pleased to announce the signing of the program's first recruit for the 2007-08 season. The Hardrockers welcome Scott May to the program. May is 6-foot-2-inch guard from Smoky Hill High School in Aurora, Colo. As a senior he averaged 13 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. He also helped his team, the Smoky Hill Buffalo to a 22-4 record during the 2006-07 campaign and earned the League title from the Centennial League in 5A division basketball. The Buffalo also made an Elite Eight appearance this past season as well. "Scott May comes from a very good basketball program. He really brings more of those intangibles to the floor – the type of things that can't be coached. Either a kid knows them or he doesn't, " Henry said. May received All State honorable mention, earned first team honors for the Centennial League and was also named to the All City (Aurora) team at the conclusion of his senior season. "He's a hard nose kid from one of the top teams in Colorado 5A basketball, " Henry added. During his junior season, May averaged 9.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. He was the MVP of the Heritage/Thunderridge Tip-off Tournament, was named to the second team in the Centennial League and was All City honorable mention. Also during his junior year, May helped his team finish with a 21-6 overall record and make a first ever trip to the Final Four in post season play. May plans to pursue a degree in Industrial Engineering while attending South Dakota School of Mines. The Hardrocker basketball team is coming off an outstanding season. After SDM finished second in Dakota Athletic Conference play, they made a strong run in the postseason against some tough competition and finished with an appearance in the DAC tournament title game. The Hardrockers ended the year with a 9-5 conference record. 3-on-3 basketball tournament The Rapid City Days Inn along with the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrock Club will be holding a 3-on-3 girls and boys and men's and women's basketball tournament Sunday May 6 at the King Center on the SDM campus in Rapid City. The tournament will be divided into five different divisions based on age with the open division for anyone who has graduated from high school. There will be a minimum of four players to a team and each team is guaranteed two games. The entry fee is $40 per team with a cost of $5 for each additional player over four. The deadline to register is May 1 and there will be no refunds for "no shows." Rules and brackets will be posted the day of the tournament and a schedule will be posted on the Hardrocker website on May 3.
