It proved to be productive for the Hardrockers as they were able to capture seven event titles on the day. SDM sophomore Shannon Hellman (Rapid City, S.D.) swept the hurdle races, taking first in both the 100-meter hurdles (14.14 seconds) and the 400 hurdles (1:07.27). Hardrocker senior Jake Donnelly (Elk Point, S.D.) earned a first-place finish in the 400 dash and set a SDM school record in the process (48.23); sophomore Colton Reid (Colstrip, Mont.) broke the tape in the 800 run with a time of 1:56.12; senior Shane Hague (New Underwood, S.D.) was the top placer in the 1, 500 with a mark of 4:11.96; junior Chandler Caldwell (Thornton, Colo.) cleared a height of 15-fett-0-inches in the pole vault to for first place and the 4x400 men's relay team, made up of Colin Royer (Ft. Pierre, S.D.) Mark Wager (Getteysburg, S.D.) Donnelly and Reid had the fastest time at 3:19.50. In other Hardrocker highlights, freshman Samantha Diede (Huron, S.D.) placed in two events – she finished fourth in the 1, 500 with a 5:20.68 and then secured sixth in the 800 with a mark of 2:36.68; Jennifer Strong (freshman from Upton, Wyo.) also showed a good effort, taking second in the high jump after clearing 5-0 and then grabbed seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 32-4; Ashley Stewart (sophomore from Scotland, S.D.) also cleared 5-0 in the high jump but settled for a tie at third place and then took seventh in the discus with a distance of 98-7; Tyler Flattum (Bristol, S.D.) finished fourth in the 100 dash (11.48) and then took second in the 110 hurdles (15.35); Wager had a strong showing in the 200 dash with a second place finish (22.56); Rob Hahn (junior from Sioux Falls) continues to improve his 800 time. He took sixth on Saturday, clocking a 2:02.94; Marcus Moor (freshman from Kadoka, S.D.) grabbed ninth in the 1, 500; Andy Lein (sophomore from Gordon, Neb.) came in seventh in the 3, 000 steeplechase (11:12.34) and senior Eric Voorhees (Gillette, Wyo.) threw the shot put 47-6 for sixth place. Football The 26th installment of the South Dakota School of Mines football game was one of the best ones to date as each team having a stellar lineup that seemed to be evenly matched as the game had to be decided in overtime as the SDM Alumni won on the last play of the game, 21-18. In overtime, each team started from the opposite 25 yard line for a chance to get into the end zone. The varsity had the first crack where they came away with three points, thanks to the boot of Jesse Morris on a 22-yard attempt. The Alumni answered on their attempt, as quarterback Nick Wald connected with Rob Lyke on a two yard strike on a fourth-down attempt to give them six points and the ending score of the game. It was Lyke's second touchdown of the game and the third TD completion for Wald. Mike Phenicie scored the other touchdown for the Alumni. Wald ended with 119 yards, completing 16 of 38, but had four interceptions. Phenicie led the Alumni in receptions, racking up 56 yards on two catches. 1978 former All-American Jim Guthrie led the ground attack, and looked sharp, carrying the ball 10 times for 44 yards. For the SDM Varsity, sophomore quarterback Jason Beilstein had an outstanding effort, going 25-43 for 251 yards and two touchdowns. Lukas Munsell was Beilstein's favorite target, catching 14 balls for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Munsell was also the workhorse in the running game, netting 87 yards on 22 carries.
