COLLINS, Colo. --- Despite some undesirable temperatures along with an early spring rain, the South Dakota School of Mines men's and women' track teams were able to "weather the storm" and post some quality times over the weekend at the Rob Upton Invitational in Ft. Collins Colo. "It was bad weather, " said Hardrocker head track coach Jerry Schafer. "It was pretty wet and miserable for most of the day. They even had to move the high jump and pole vault inside." Moving the pole vault indoors wasn't much of a deterrent for SDM's Chandler Caldwell. The Thornton, Colo., junior was able to clear 15-feet-5-inches for a personal best mark, net third place at the meet and set a new Hardrocker outdoor record. That height also provisionally qualified the Metallurgical Engineering major for the NAIA National Meet at the end of May. SDM women's standout Shannon Hellman continued to impress as well. After winning a national indoor title in the 55-meter hurdles back in early March, the Rapid City native is on pace to contend for a couple outdoor championships season too. During Saturday's meet, Hellman won the 100-meter high hurdles, clocking a time of 14.32 seconds. She also placed in the 400 hurdles, taking seventh in a time of 1 minute 10.32 seconds. "Her times weren't indicative of how fast she can run those races, " Schafer said. "She spent a lot of time in the cold weather and that had an effect on her." The Hardrocker distances runners also were able to do some good things at Saturday's meet. After somewhat of a sub par performance last week at the Colorado University Invite in Boulder, the milers turned things around and were competitive in every race. "Our distance people stepped up and ran well, " Schafer said. The 800 run saw ‘Rocker sophomore Colton Reid (Colstrip, Mont.) finish in fourth place, clocking a 1:59.19 while senior Shane Hague (New Underwood, S.D.) earned eighth place with a 2:00.66. "Shane won his heat to take eighth overall and Colton did well with his fourth-place finish. He ran down a couple people on the straight-aways, " Schafer added. Rob Hahn and Scott Anderson also competed in the half-mile race for South Dakota Mines. Anderson took 12th (2:03.55) and Hahn finished 14th (2:05.18). In the other distance events: Kyle Kattke (junior from Black Hawk, S.D.), Andy Lein (sophomore from Gordon, Neb.) and Nate Hicks (freshman from Yankton, S.D.) ran competitive times in the 5, 000 run. Hick took 10th with a time of 16:38.61, Kattke finished 11th with a 16:38.61 and Lein was 12th with a 17:27.68; Marcus Moor (freshman from Kadoka, S.D.) took 45th in the 1, 500 in a time of 4:41.57. South Dakota School of Mines was also represented well in the field event. Senior shot putter Eric Voorhees, from Gillette, Wyo., finished third in the event after a toss of 47-7.75 and teammate Matt Deardoff, sophomore from Brandon, S.D., secured seventh in the event with a 41-8.75. Mark Bauer, a freshman from Hysham, Mont., who did not compete during the indoor season, has been having a strong showing outdoors. Saturday the Metallurgical Engineering major finished fifth in the javelin, recording a distance of 139.4. The Lady Hardrockers also made their presences know in the field event as Jenny Strong (freshman from Upton, Wyo.) tied for third in the high jump, clearing 5-1 and Ashley Stewart (sophomore from Scotland, S.D.) tied for fifth with a jump of 4-11. Stewart also placed in the discuss, earning eighth with a throw of 94-2. In the team rankings, the SDM men took seventh, scoring 23.50 points while the ‘Rocker women earned eighth with 21.50 points. Next up the Hardrockers will be Bauer Invitational this weekend at O'Harra Field in Rapid City. |
