| Transcript | Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines BOULDER, Colo. --- With the indoor season behind them, the South Dakota School of Mines track and field teams started the outdoor season this past Saturday in Boulder, Colo., at the Colorado University Invitation. The Hardrockers had one event winner in pole vaulter Chandlor Caldwell (Thornton, Colo.). The junior won the event after clearing 15-feet-1-inch. Caldwell is coming off an impressive indoor season where he made an appearance at the NAIA National Indoor Championships. Another NAIA indoor meet competitor, senior Jake Donnelly, who earned indoor All American honors, also continued his sucess to start the outdoor season, taking second in the 100-meter dash Saturday in a time of 10.94 seconds and secured fifth place in the 200 dash, clocking a 21.90. "Jake was two hundredth of a second off of a provisional qualification in the 200 and 12 hundreths of a second off in the 100, " said Hardrocker head coach Jerry Schafer. Indoor National Champion Shannon Hellman, a sophomore from Rapid City, also excelled outside, taking third in the 100 high hurdles with a mark of 14.14. She also automatically qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Championships which will take place at the end of May. "Shannon took third, but it was a very close race with two girls from (University of) Wyoming, " Schafer said. Sophomore Ashley Stewart (Scotland, S.D.) came through for the Hardrockers, tying for second place in the high jump after clearing 4-11. Teammate Beth Hansen (junior from Baltic, S.D.) also place in the event, taking sixth with a jump of 4-9. Freshman Katrina Donovan (Martin, S.D.) placed in two events, grabbing fifth in the discuss after a throw of 121-5 and then settled for seventh in the shot put with a toss of 35-5.25. "It was a bit of a surprise to see Katrina throw so well in the discuss, " Schafer said. "Her throw of 121-5 moved her up to fifth on the ‘all time list' --- and we have had a lot of really good discuss throwers." Other Hardrocker highlights included: Mark Wager (freshman from Gettysburg, S.D.) earned sixth in the 400 dash (50.61) and also finished 11th in the 200 (23.04); senior Eric Voorhees (Gillette, Wyo.) took a fourth-place finish in the shot put after a toss of 50-4.50 and then took 10th in the hammer throw with a distance of 125-4; Matt Deardoff came through with a seventh-place finish in the shot put (44-00.50) and then finished 12th in the discuss (133-11); Colton Reid scored a point for SDSMT in the 800 run, taking eighth in a time of 1:56.55; Samantha Diede also grabbed an eighth-place finish in the women's 800 with a 2:40.11 and also ran the 1, 500 run, finishing 14th (5:31.28). It was a great start to the outdoor season, " said Hardrocker head coach Jerry Schafer. "I look forward to continuing our progress and the kids look like they are on the right track." The Hardrocker travel to Ft. Collins, Colo., Saturday for the Rob Upton Invite. |
