| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- Junior Industrial Engineering major Melanie Vedvei of South Dakota Mines was named to the NAIA Division II women's basketball First Team. Vedvei, a guard from Preston, S.D., was named the DAC Most Valuable Player for the second straight season. She led the league in scoring with 19.0 points per game and steals with 3.9 per game. She also averaged 7.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists per outing. Nationally, Vedvei was ranked second in steals per game (4), 12th in points per game, 23rd in assists per game (5), 29th in defensive rebounds per game (6), 31st in free throw percentage (81 percent) and 39th in total rebounds per game (8). For the season, Vedvei tallied 598 point which put her fifth in the all time scoring category as a Lady Hardrocker. She also established the season record for most steals with 124 as well as the most in her career at 322. "It was well deserved, " Lady Hardrocker head coach Barb Felderman said. �������She is one of the top (players) in the country." This past season, Vedvei helped the Hardrockers to a 20-11 overall record (8-6 in DAC) earning second place in the conference at the end of the regular season. The Hardrockers made a run in the post season making it to the DAC Tournament Championship game. Vedvei was also an All American Second Team selection in 2005. |
