TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines had a banner weekend to as the Hardrocker football team put up it's first shutout in 12 years defeating Trinity Bible College, 29-0, while the Lady Hardrocker volleyball team made a clean sweep at a tournament in Rocklin, Calif., improving their season record to 9-0. Football The South Dakota School of Mines football made a bold statement Saturday night at O'Harra Stadium in Rapid City as the Hardrockers looked impressive in every aspect of the game, scoring two rushing touchdowns, one passing TD, a safety, as well as an interception that was ran back for a touchdown. The ‘Rockers gained 340 total offensive yards, while holding the Trinity Lions to just 147. Individually, the Hardrockers received Dakota Athletic Conference accolades earning DAC offensive and defensive Player of the Week honors. SDM senior Lukas Munsell (Mills, Wyo.) had a career game, racking up 256 all purpose yards, which netted him the DAC offensive honor. He had 133 yards rushing on 12 carries and a touchdown to go along with 75 reception yards on four catches and a touchdown. Freshman Tom Lunzman shined bright on defense, picking off two passes and returning one 33 yards for a touchdown in the second half of play.He also blocked a punt, broken up a pass, had three solo tackles and one assisted tackle to boot. Junior running back Joshua Jones also played well for SDM, tallying 74 yards on 14 carries and scoring a touchdown as well. Hardrocker quarterback Jason Beilstein was 8-17 for 132 yards on the night, throwing the one touchdown. Defensively, Zach Marcus (sophomore from Olivia, Minn.) paced the Hardrockers with eight tackles (two solo, six assisted), including two for a loss. The SDM defense also netted three sacks, one by Tyrell Anderson (sophomore from Green River, Wyo.), one by Anthony Rud (senior from Belmont, Calif.) and one by Brian Kemnitz (a freshman from Vivian, S.D.). Freshman Ian Prichard (Richland, Wash.) also contributed with an inception as well. Next up, the Hardrocker travel to Lawrence Kansas to square off with the Haskell Indian Nations Fightin' Indians, Saturday at 1 p.m. Volleyball The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team headed to the West Coast for the William Jessup Volleyball Shootout this past weekend. The Lady Hardrockers won all five of their matches and remain undefeated on the young season. SDM defeated Northwestern Christian College (Oregon), Menlo College (Calif.)3-0, Benedictine University (Kansas), 3-2, Baker University (3-0) and William Jessup (3-1). Menlo College was the three-time defending Califorina Pacific Conference champs heading into their match with the Hardrockers and the match against Benedictine could have gone either way as the final game was decided by just two points. "We have a much more mature team here, " said Hardrocker head coach Beth Honaker said. "They are able to adapt in crucial situations. Considering the environment, the heat, no (air conditioning) where we've been playing, the girls dealt with it and adapted to the change of atmosphere." The Hardrockers start conference play Wednesday, taking on long time rival Black Hills State and then have their home opener Saturday against Dakota Wesleyan in the King Center at 3 p.m.
