| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines was in full force once again this past weekend, hosting a pair of Dakota Athletic Conference volleyball matches as well as a non-conference football game while the men's cross country team competed in Brookings and the men's and women's golf team teed it up in North Dakota. Football The Hardrocker football team played a competitive, edge-of-your-seat type of contest against the Mayville State Comets at O'Harra Stadium on Saturday --- so much so that a winner wasn't determined until after the third overtime of the game. The game had to go to triple overtime before a winner was declared. Photo by Beth Honaker. In the end, the Comets were able to eek out the non-conference win, 10-7. Both sides slugged it out the entire game and it wasn't until late in the fourth quarter that SDM scored --- after a 99-yard drive. Hardrocker junior running back Joshua Jones capped off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 5 minutes and 19 second to play. SDM freshman kicker Justin Whalin tacked on the extra point to go up 7-0. The Comets however put together a nice string of plays and answered with a touchdown strike at the other end of the field on a 14-yard pass reception from TJ Standford to Matt Stenehjem. Dustin Hagans made good on the PAT to tie the game. In the end, it was Hagans that made good on a 36-yard attempt to give his team the lead and the win in the "very" extended contest. Offensively, Jones paced the Hardrockers, netting 126 yards to go along with his team's only TD. Hardrocker senior Lukus Munsell led the team in receiving yards, hauling in six passes for 57 yards. Jason Beilstein was SDM's quarterback for a majority of the game where he completed 10 of 22 passes for 79 yards and no interceptions. On the defensive side of the ball, the ‘Rockers continue to impress, collecting two more intereceptions. They also had a blocked field goal, a forced fumble and two very impressive goal line stands. Junior Chad Westendorf intercepted a ball to prevent a touchdown and Jarrod Luze had one when Mayville's attempt on a fake punt went south. Junior Tyrell Anderson led the Hardrockers in tackles, tallying 17 on the day, including 1.5 for a loss of three yards. He also had a fumble recovery. Westendorf and sophomore Zach Marcus both had 14 tackles for the game, while freshman Tom Lunzman recorded 13 and junior Colton Clark came up with 12. Next up, the ‘Rockers heads to North Dakota to face the Dickinson Blue Hawks on Saturday. It also marks the start of the DAC schedule. Volleyball The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team are now 4-0 when playing at home this season and after winning two Dakota Athletic Conference games over the weekend, have pushed their overall record to 13-1 and are currently 2-1 in the DAC. After taking out NCAA Div. II Chadron State on Tuesday, 3-2, the Hardrockers won matches against Valley City, 3-1, on Friday and Mayville State, 3-1, Saturday. The Hardrockers defeated Valley City, 24-30, 30-24, 30-21, 30-15 to earn their first DAC win of the season. As a team, South Dakota Mines went 134-164 on the attack with 44 kills and did an excellent job at the line, collecting nine aces. The Vikings were 152-190 with 45 kills and had seven aces in the match. Individually for the Hardrockers, Ashley Kauffman was 33-39 with 13 kills and teammate Jennie Malone had 11 kills and was 23-27 on the attack. Jenny Hiykel had another outstanding performance, collecting 35 digs in the match and SDM setter Tessa Howe contributed with 39 assists. Photo by Brad Blume The Hardrockers then made short work of Mayville, 30-28, 27-30, 30-27, 30-18. For the match, SDM was 165-200 on the attack collecting 60 kills. They also have 97 digs and 10 aces in the contest. Individually, Malone had another impressive performance with 18 kills and was 41-44 on the attack and Katherine Hanson went 42-52 on the attack and had 16 kills. Howe had 51 assist for the match to go along with five aces and Hiykel led the team in digs with 35. Hiykel was also named the DAC Libero of the Week for the second consecutive week and was honored as the No. 1 libero for NAIA Region III. Cross Country The South Dakota School of Mines men's cross country team travel to Brookings over the weekend to race at the South Dakota State Classic. The Hardrockers had some comparable "pack times" all placing close to one another. The men's race was won by James Krajsa of Minnesota State – Mankato in a time of 25 minutes and 5 seconds. SDM's top finisher was junior Colton Reid who came in 40th, clocking a time of 27:29. Freshman Lucas Fried was three spots back in 43rd, finishing in a time of 27:34 and senior Kyle Kattke was two more position back in 45th with a mark of 27:38. Senior Rob Hahn and Marcus Moor also had similar times. Hahn took 57th place in a time of 28:21 and Moor was 62nd, clocking a 28:51. As a team the Hardrockers finished ninth with 217 points. Next up, the Hardrocker men and the women travel to North Dakota this weekend for the Blue Hawk Invitational at Dickinson, N.D. Golf The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's golf teams returned from a trip to North Dakota where they competed in the Jamestown Jimmies' Invitational at the Jamestown Country Club this past Sunday and Monday. On the men's side, it was Minot State that carded the lowest score, shooting a two-day team total of 604, with Dickson State a close second at 619. Jamestown College secured third place with 651 strokes while the Hardrockers settled for fourth with a 663. Individually, Minot's Justin Alberle won medalist honors with a 36-hole score of 146, followed by teammate Jordan Kelly who put up a 148. Hardrocker Brandon Eisenbraun cracked the Top 10 for the first time this season, coming in with a 75 after Day 1, followed by an 81 on the second day for a total of 156, which netted him a tie for seventh place in the tournament. Teammate Same Hermanson shot a 157 (80-77), which also earned him a spot in the Top 10, tying for ninth. "They each had one good day where shot in the 70's, " said Hardrocker head coach Eric Glenn. "They needed to figure out a way to put two good days together." Looking at the DAC standings, Eisenbraun moved into 10th place with 22.5 points, while Hermanson is back in 11th with 22 points. To advance to the Region III tournament, an individual has to finish in the Top 10 of the conference standings and Glenn said that both have the potential to do so. The other Hardrocker scores from the tournament had Bryce Taylor firing a 184 (98-86) and Ricky Clausen ending with a 166 (82-84). "We have a very young group, " Glenn said. "They are all freshmen and sophomores out there." On the women���s side, Dickinson State tallied the lowest team score for the second week in a row with 705 strokes with Black Hills State again taking second with a 750. Jamestown carded a 764 for third, Minot State was fourth with 780 and the Lady Hardrockers secured fifth with 894. Individually, Blue Hawk Megan Fisher is establishing herself as an early Dakota Athletic Conference favorite, shooting the lowest score, also for the second-straight week, posting a 154 while Yellow Jacket Anne Langdell applied pressure for second place with a 169. The Hardrockers' lowest round came from Kajada Stevens, who shot 204 (100-104) over the two days. Teammate Ayla Brausen carded a 222 (109-113), Stephanie Leber had a 229 (110-119) and Jodi Kaup rounded out the tournament with a 239 (115-124). ��Every girl we had out there this weekend had a personal best score on the first day, " Glenn said. "We have to give Lisa Steever (assistant coach) a lot of the credit. She has been doing a good job working with all the girls. She is our swing coach." The Hardrockers, along with the rest of the DAC will finish up the fall portion of the season this weekend (Sept. 23-24) with their third trip to North Dakota in three weeks, competing in the Minot State Invite at the Souris Valley Golf Course and the Minot Country Club. |
