TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- It took them five games, but the South Dakota School Mines improved its overall record to 11-1 after a hard fought victory over NCAA Div. II Chadron State, Tuesday night, 3-2, at the King Center in Rapid City. The Hardrockers defeated the Eagles, 30-21, 30-25, 24-30, 25-30, 15-9. SD Mines looked very strong in the first two games going on some lengthy runs, but Chadron State was able to regroup in games three and four, only to see the Lady Rockers dominate in the final frame to win the non-conference bout. "Chadron State definitely came to play in Game 3 and used that momentum to win Game 4, " said Hardrocker head coach Beth Honaker. "The intermission (between the second and third games) always seem to hurt us." For the match, South Dakota Mines was 171-207 on the attack with 59 kills and went 49-54 on the serve with eight aces while the Eagles also tallied 59 kills and 177-220 on the attack and recorded six aces and went 47-57 on the serve. Individually, Honaker praised the efforts of junior libero Jenny Hiykel. The Omaha, Neb., native came up with 42 digs on the night and had three serving aces. She was also named the Dakota Athletic Conference Libero of the Week after splitting matches last week. "Jenny is great in the back row. She can anticipate the play and reads extremely well, " Honaker said. "The girls in the back row trust her and know she will always be there. She also passes extremely well." On the offensive, Rapid City's own Jennie Malone (senior) led the team in kills with 19 and was 44-49 on the attack. Teammate Ashley Kauffman was 39-48 on the attack with 14 kills. Setter Tessa Howe also had a stellar outing with 47 assists, one serving ace and a total of four blocks. The Hardrockers will get back into conference play this weekend playing host to Valley City State on Friday and Mayville State on Saturday. Last season SDM split with the Comets, while the Lady Vikings swept SDM, including postseason, 3-0. SD School of Mines def.
