| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- It was another busy week for the South Dakota School of Mines athletic programs with cross country and golf joining the football and volleyball teams as all programs have now started their 2007 campaings. The Hardrocker cross country team held a home meet this past Saturday, the SDM football team won their second game of the season and the volleyball team got back to their winning ways, capturing an overall record of 10-1 on the season. Cross Country The South Dakota School of Mines cross country meet was held this past Saturday at Robinsdale Park in Rapid City with Black Hills State, Rocky Mountain College and Montana State University – Billings all in attendance. Conditions weren't exactly ideal, with temps in the upper 50's to go along with a brisk and strong 30 mph wind. In the women's race, the Lady Yellow Jackets took the top four places, as Kerry Washburn won the 5-kilometer race, in a time of 19 minutes 23.50 seconds, followed by teammate Wendy O'Lexey (19:32.41), Alicia Verhulst (20:35.79) and Shelli Scheffler (21:19.22). New Hardrocker recruits Kendra Crisman and Brittnany Hovdenses (both freshmen) finished fifth and sixth respectively. Both girls competed for Rapid City Stevens last year, and appear to have made the transition from high school to college with little problems. Crisman clocked a time of 21:45.17 while Hovdenes finished with a mark of 21:45.17. "Kendra and Brittany ran very well for us as I expected them to, " said Hardrocker head coach Jerry Schafer. "They got up toward the front and worked their way through the pack. I am excited about their fifth and sixth place finishes." As for the rest of the Hardrockers, Samantha Diede came in 31st in a time of 25:34.38, Jessie Chretien was 33rd with a 25:58.41, Kim Kerce clocked a 26:33.75 for 34th and Molly Vukelich took 35th in a time of 27:58.85. "The rest of our ladies packed really well, " Schafer said. "It was a good starting point. It will be fun to watch them as they improve over the season." Looking at the women's team standings, BHSU took first with 17 points, MSU Billings was second with 50 points, SDM earned third with 75 and Rocky Mountain College was fourth with 103. BHSU's Allen Wood cruised to win the 8k race, clocking a time of 26:18.50. "Allen Wood looked like he ran a comfortable race. He had a great time today, " Walkinshaw added. The Hardrockers' top runners were senior Kyle Kattke and freshman Lucas Fried. Kattke took 13th with a mark of 28:45.26 which was 30 seconds faster from a year ago, and Fried was a few ticks behind in 14th in a time of 28:56.00. "Kyle Kattke ran a steady race at the front, " Schafer said. "Lucas went up there with him. That was a big surprise as a freshman. They aren't sharp yet, but I was pleased with how they were able to get to the front." As for the rest of the ‘Rocker runners, Colton Reid took 19th in a time of 29:41.08, Rob Hahn was 20th with a 29:51.09 and Marcus Moor clocked a time of 30:10.14 for 23rd place. "Those three, as a pack, are getting stronger, " Schafer said. "They will be up front with Kyle and Lucas before you know it." Team wise, the Yellow Jackets took first with 15 points, the Hardrockers were second with 58 points and Montana State University-Billings was third with 66 points. Volleyball After suffering their first defeat of the season in a very competitive match against long-time rival Black Hills State last Wednesday, the Lady Hardrockers bounced back nicely, defeating Dakota Wesleyan University, 4-1, Saturday at the King Center. The ‘Rockers defeated DWU 30-22, 28-30, 30-19, 30-22. "We passed extremely well (Saturday), " said Hardrocker volleyball head coach Beth Honaker. "And I think the reason we pass well in the match is because of the way we serve in practice." Individually, SDM had another outstanding offensive assault as junior Ashley Kauffman tallied 16 kills and was 36-46 on the attack. Teammate Katherine Hanson was 29-34 on attacks with 15 kills and freshman Paige Corcoran ended with 10 kills while going 20-24 on the attack. "I really have to compliment Paige for her efforts, " Honaker said. "We have been struggling in our second outside hitter position. Paige has been practicing well and we decided to start her. For a freshman, she can really hold her own." SDM junior setter Tessa Howe also played well Saturday notching 53 assists while junior libero Jenny Hiykel provided good defense with 20 digs in the match. Football The Hardrocker football team is off to its best start in over 20 years after defeating Haskell Indian Nations University, 17-3, Saturday in Lawrence Kan. SDM ran a touchdown in and collected another through the air to go along with a field goal as the ‘Rockers roll to a 2-0 start – the first time since 1984. Hardrocker junior running back Joshua Jones netted 158 rushing yards on the day and was credited with the rushing touchdown, while freshman Trevor Roberts caught a 14-yard strike for the other touchdown. Rapid City's own Justin Whalin made good on a 34-yard field goal attempt to add three more points and account for all of SDM's scoring. The Mines defense also shined, not allowing a touchdown for the second consecutive week. Individually, freshman Tom Lunzman came up with two more interceptions in the game and now has four total on the young season. Lunzman returned an interception for a touchdown in the bout against Trinity Bible and was named the Dakota Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for his efforts. Sophomores Zach Marcus and Chad Westendorf also had interceptions in Saturday's game against Haskell. Junior Tyrell Anderson led the team with seven solo tackles, while Jared Luze contributed with five solo and one assisted tackle and Charlie Hankins impressed with five solo tackles. The football team will play host to Mayville State this Saturday on Dunham Field at O'Harra Stadium in a non-conference matchup at 1 p.m. |
