| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines ROCKLIN, CALIF. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team made it a clean sweep at the William Jessup University volleyball tournament winning two more matches Saturday afternoon to push their record to an impressive 9-0 on the season. After making short work of Northwestern Christian College (Oregon), 3-0, and Menlo College (California), 3-0, and then edging past Benedictine College (Kansas), 3-2, on Friday, the Lady Hardrockers followed it up with wins over Baker University (Kansas), 3-0, and the host school William Jessup (Rocklin), 3-1, Saturday afternoon in Rocklin, Calif. In the first match of the day, SDM defeated the Baker Wildcats, 30-25, 30-21, 30-20. The Hardrockers racked up 40 kills 10 aces and nine blocks in the bout. "We blocked much better and we served extremely well, " said Hardrocker head coach Beth Honaker of the Baker match. "Serving was really a key factor in the win." Much like Friday's contest, Rapid City native Jennie Malone had a strong showing Saturday, collecting 12 kills and made good on 23-25 from the attack against Baker. Junior Ashley Hoffman, of Fort Morgan, Colo., also had a good outing, going 21-27 on the attack and collected 10 kills for her efforts. SDM setter Tessa Howe (junior from Omaha, Neb.) proved why she is an all conference player making good on 33 assists and had three aces for the match to boot. Junior Jenny Hiykel (Omaha, Neb.) also excelled in the back row, coming up with 23 digs and had two aces herself. In the last match of the tournament, the Lady ‘Rockers took it to four games with the Lady Warriors, but eventually the Hardrockers came out on top, 30-20, 30-23, 22-30, 30-24. SDM hammered down 37 kills in the match and made good on 88-121 attacks, had 10 blocks and had 13 aces. Hoffman paced the Hardrockers with 10 kills seven digs and two blocks while sophomore Katherine Hanson contributed with nine kills, was 22-34 on the attack, had 10 digs and two blocks. Howe had 33 assists from the setter position for SDM and Hiykel ended with three aces and 16 digs for the match. With a perfect 5-0 record for the tournament, Honaker said she has seen vast improvement in the team from a year ago. "We have a much more mature team here, " Honaker said. "They are able to adapt in crucial situations." And given the fact that the Hardrockers are playing in a region of the country that's a tad out of their element says a lot for the team as well. "Considering the environment, the heat, no (air conditioning) where we've been playing, the girls have dealt with it and have adapted to the change of atmosphere, " the coach said. The Hardrockers will begin Dakota Athletic Conference play Wednesday when they travel to Spearfish to square off with long time rival Black Hills State.
