| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines volleyball team had a very productive weekend, winning two Dakota Athletic Conference games and moving up to third place in the standings, while the Hardrocker football team played its last home game of the season, suffering a tough loss to the Valley City Vikings and the men's and women's basketball teams kicked off the season traveling to Montana. Volleyball The Lady Hardrocker volleyball team had probably its biggest win of the season Friday, taking down Jamestown College, 3-1, to climb up the DAC rankings into third place to better situate themselves for the postseason tournament which starts in just under two weeks. SDM defeated Jamestown Friday, 30-22, 28-30, 31-29, 30-24. "That was one of our best wins of the season, " said Hardrocker volleyball head coach Beth Honaker. "We knew if we got out to a quick start we would have a good chance to win." Rapid City senior Jennie Malone paced the team with 16 kills and was 45-51 on the attack while junior Ashley Kauffman (Fort Morgan, Colo.) and sophomore Katherine Hanson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) both added 15 kills on the night. Kauffman was 47-58 on the attack and Hanson went 47-52. SDM junior libero, who earned this week's DAC Libero honors for the fifth time this season, ended Friday's match with 43 digs and setter Tessa Howe, who earned DAC Setter of the Week accolades, looked strong with 42 assists in the bout. Even the Hardrockers bench saw some quality minutes with Honaker giving special recognition to freshman Danielle Walraven (Huron, S.D.), junior Amanda Cammack (Sturgis, S.D.) and junior Renae Keppen (Dakota Dunes, S.D.). Walraven had an impressive night serving the ball making good on all 20 of 20 attempts with an ace while Cammack and Keppen contributed strongly at the net. "Dani had been serving well in practice all week and both Renae and Amanda contributed a lot, " Honaker said. "It's lucky for us that we have a bench that can come in and pick up the slack. Against the Trojans on Saturday, SDM won the match, 30-20, 30-17, 30-18. "Our girls played hard and we were able to take Dakota State out in three games, " said Honaker of the DSU match. "It is sure nice to have that 20th win under our belt." The victory gives the SDM netters a 20-4 overall record and 8-4 in the conference and also marks the fifth win in a row. Individually, Kauffman paced the Hardrocker offense with 13 kills and was 32-36 on the attack while Malone and Keppen added nine kills. Malone was 18-19 on the attack and Keppen went 21-21. The Hardrockers had 11 aces on the night. Howe was 20-21 from the line with two aces and Hanson was 16-16 with two aces. Hiykel, excelled again in the match defensively with 27 digs while Howe, added 36 assists on the night. The Hardrockers finish up the regular season next weekend with matches against Minot State and Dickinson State. The Blue Hawks are unbeaten in conference action. No matter how next weekend turns out, the Mines netters are guaranteed a home match during the conference post-season tournament. Football The SD Mines football team closed out the home portion of its schedule this past Saturday, falling to the Valley City State Vikings, 34-3. The Vikings utilized a clever game plan, attacking the Hardrocker secondary to gain a three-touchdown lead after the first quarter which kept them in the driver's seat the whole game. South Dakota Mines tallied 194 yards of total offense to 701 of the Vikings. The Hardrockers only points came on a 28-yard field goal from freshman kicker Justin Whalin (Rapid City, S.D.). Individually for the Hardrockers senior Lukas Munsell (Mills, Wyo.) paced the team in rushing, carrying the ball 21 times for 96 yards. For the second week in a row, freshman wide out Ed Waliczek (Chicago, Ill.) led all receivers with 41 yards on four catches, his longest coming on a 27-yard reception. Freshman Trevor Roberts (Vancouver, Wash.) got the start at quarterback again where he completed 8 of 24 passes for 68 yards with one interception. Freshman punter Joe Sanchez (Gilbert, Ariz.) had another fine performance, making good on eight punts for 285 yards. He averaged 35.6 yards a punt, had a long of 58 and had two placed inside the 20. Defensively, freshman Tom Lunzman (Gretna, Neb.) led the team in tackles, recording 14 on the day (6 solo), while junior Tyrell Anderson (Green River, Wyo.) ended the game with 13 (3 solo). Junior cornerback Chad Westendorf (Geddes, S.D.) had a good effort with five tackles as well as an interception in the end zone at the end of the first half. The SDM defense also had 5.5 tackles for a loss. Anderson, junior Colton Clark (Worland, Wyo.), senior Charlie Hankins (Fall City, Neb.), freshman Everett Brill (Elko, Nev.), freshman Paris Butler (Anchorage, Aka.) freshman Joseph Berke (Elwood, Neb.) and junior Jarrod Luze (White, S.D.) were all credit with tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Brill and sophomore Kayne Ree (Big Horn, Wyo.) also each recovered a fumble. Ree's was for no gain while Brill returned his eight yards. The loss gives the ‘Rockers a 3-6 overall record and 1-5 mark in the conference. The only game left on the schedule is at Mayville State this weekend in North Dakota. Men's Basketball The SDSM&T men's hoop team traveled to Montana this past weekend to kick off the 2007-08 season. The Hardrockers competed hard but came up short in both outings. In Friday's game against Carroll College, the ‘Rockers lost the non-conference bout, 87-84, and then fell to Montana Tech on Saturday, 75-61. Against Carroll, SDM trailed 39-32 at the half, but outscored their opponents 52-48 in the second period, only to come up, three points short. Sophomore Robbie Fedor (Monticello, Minn.) paced the ‘Rockers with 26 points. Junior Brandon Smith (Amenia, N.D.) had 12 points and six rebounds and freshman Kyler Ludwig (Beeville, Texas) put up 11 markers. Against the Orediggers, SDM again got outscored in the first half, 39-23, but again put up more points in the second stanza, 38-36. Fedor again paced the Hardrockers with 14 points while freshman Michael Ross (Fort Worth, Texas) and junior Donny DeGooyer both cashed in for 10. DeGooyer also led on the boards, grabbing eight for SDM. The Hardrocker men and women are home this weekend with games on Saturday and Sunday. SDM plays Dakota Wesleyan University Saturday at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. followed by games Sunday at 2 and 4 p.m. |
