| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines fall sports seasons are in the home stretch as the Lady Hardrocker volleyball team started the second half of its conference schedule, the SDM cross country team finished a big race in Yankton and is now looking toward the conference meet and the football team has just three games left on the docket before closing out the 2007 campaign. Football The South Dakota School of Mines football team had another tough opponent this past weekend as the Hardrockers locked horns with the NAIA No. 7 ranked Jamestown College Jimmies in a Dakota Athletic Conference matchup Saturday on Dunham Field at O'Harra Stadium in Rapid City. The Jimmies were able to hold SDM in check all day, posting a 51-0 victory and stay undefeated on the season. The loss kept the ‘Rockers winless in DAC play and their overall record fell to 2-5. Photo by Brad Blume The Hardrockers were able to move the ball at times and managed to pick up 10 first downs on the day. Individually, junior running back Joshua Jones (Long Beach, Calif.) led the ground game, carrying the ball 11 times for 48 yards. Senior Lukas Munsell (Mills, Wyo.) led all receivers with four catches for 37 yards and he also rushed the ball 13 times for 29 yards. Freshman punter Joe Sanchez (Gilbert, Ariz.) had another fine day kicking the ball, putting the boot to seven balls for a total of 226 yards. He averaged 32.3 yards a punt, had a long of 45 and managed to get one inside the Jimmies' 20. SDM sophomore quarterback Jason Beilstein (Lodi, Calif.) netted 120 yards, completing 13 of 39 passes and throwing three interceptions. The kick return unit continued to impress. Freshman Dustin Meneley (Gulf Coast, Fla.) had three returns for 79 yards, having a long of 54. Freshman Mario Abbadessa (Phoenix, Ariz.) had three returns for 32 yards and freshman Dustin Rougeau (Big Horn, Wyo.) had one for 14. The Hardrocker defense had some good stats on the day as well. Junior linebacker Tyrell Anderson (Green River, Wyo.) again led the team in tackles, recording 12 in the game, which included two solo. Sophomore linebacker Zach Marcus (Olivia, Minn, ) also had a nice outing with 10 total tackles (two solo) and a fumble recovery. Junior defensive end Colton Clark, (Worland, Wyo.) had nine tackles on the day, one for a loss of.8 yards, had a pass breakup and also forced a fumble. Freshman defensive end Brian Kemnitz (Vivian, S.D.) was able to add to his sack total (4) after taking Jimmies quarterback down for a seven-yard loss in the fourth quarter. Next up, the Hardrocker travel East River to Madison to duke it out with the Dakota State Trojans is a 1:30 p.m. game on Saturday. Volleyball After falling to long-time rival Black Hills State in three games last Wednesday, the Lady Hardrocker volleyball team got back to its winning ways, posting a 3-1 victory over the Lee University Lady Flames (from Tennessee) Saturday morning at the National American Tournament in Rapid City. SDM defeated Lee, 30-28, 30-16, 25-30, 30-25. "Lee has been to the national tournament the last four years, " said SDM volleyball head coach Beth Honaker. "(Playing them) gives us a taste at what competition is like at a different level and it may prove to our girls just how tough our conference and region is." Individually, junior outside hitter Ashley Kauffman (Fort Morgan, Colo.) was the top point getter with 17 kills while going 34-39 on the attack. Senior middle hitter Jennie Malone also had a fine outing, going 26-28 on the attack with 14 kills and Sioux Falls sophomore Katherine Hanson had 13 kills and was 21-23 on the attack. Photo by Brad Blume Junior setter Tessa Howe (Omaha, Neb.) had 45 assists in the match and also had three aces, while junior libero Jenny Hiykel (Omaha, Neb.) paced the team in digs with 27. "We hit much better against Lee then we did against BH, " Honaker said. "It was nice to see the girls rally back after a tough loss to the Yellow Jackets last Wednesday." The win gives SDM a 16-4 overall record and the Hardrockers make one final trip to North Dakota this weekend for DAC matches against Mayville State (Friday) and Valley City State (Saturday). Cross Country The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's cross country team made a trek to Yankton, S.D., this past Saturday to compete in the Mount Marty Invitational, one of the larger meets that the Hardrockers participate in. Running in a crowd didn't seem to hinder the SDM harriers as the Hardrockers found themselves high on the leaderboard in both the men's and women's races. In the men's event, ‘Rocker senior Rob Hahn had a phenomenal day, finishing highest for his team with an 18th-place showing. The Sioux Falls, S.D., native finished in a time of 26:32.95. Teammate Colton Reid (junior from Colstrip, Mont.) was a spot back in 19th clocking a 26.33.28. "I am very pleased with the performance of Rob and Colton, " said Hardrocker cross country coach Jerry Schafer. "They both have a shot to go under 20 minutes." The men's race (8-kilometers) was won by David Barmasai of Iowa Western in a time of 24:58.57. As for the rest of the ‘Rockers, senior Kyle Kattke (Black Hawk, S.D.) turned in a 39th-place performance with a mark of 27:11.18, freshman Lucas Fried had a time of 27.52.40 for 63rd place, sophomore Marcus Moor (Kadoka, S.D.) took 103rd with a 28:44.77, freshman Corbin Haller (Sidney, Neb.) ended in 133rd with a 29:54.31 and sophomore Erik Bjornebo (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was 148th in a time of 30:33.24. There were 162 runners in the men's race and 15 teams. South Dakota Mines managed a seventh-place showing with 210 points. Dickinson State took first with 54 points. "We were seventh, but our No. 4 and 5 runners are still struggling with health issues, " Shafer said. "When we put it all together we have a really good team. We just need all our guys running well at the same time." In the women's 5k race, the Hardrockers did not field a full team, but the individual performances were impressive none the less. The overall winner was Jen Kempers of Dordt College. She took top honors in a time of 18:15.59. The top SDM runner was freshman Kendra Crisman (Rapid City, S.D.) who clocked a 20:01.94 for 28th place. Teammate and fellow freshman Brittney Hovdenes (Rapid City, S.D.) was a few spots back in 36th with a time of 20:19.37. "Kendra is close to breaking 20 minutes and is closing in on a personal best time, " Schaffer said. "Brittany equaled her season-best time and just had a solid race. I am excited to see what happens once these two start to peak. Sophomore Samantha Diede (Huron, S.D.) turned in a time of 21:57.57 for 84th place and junior Jessie Chretien was 118th after posting a time of 23:20.59. There were 146 runners in the women's race. "Sam ran her best race of the season even though (Saturday's time) wasn't quite as good as the time she ran there last year, so she has room to improve" Schafer said. "Jess ran a season-best time and she is getting stronger every week. Next up the Hardrockers have the DAC Championships. The conference meet will take place Friday in Dickinson, N.D., followed by the NAIA Region III meet Nov. 3. "I am never satisfied. There is always room for improvement, " Schaffer added. "I think we will be able to step it up down the stretch. |
