| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines athletic teams were spread throughout the region this past week. While the football team held its annual ‘M' Days homecoming against Minot State, the Lady Hardrocker volleyball team traveled to North Dakota for two Dakota Athletic Conference matches and the SDM cross country team headed to Colorado for a couple of races against NCAA Div. I and Div. II opposition. Cross Country The South Dakota School of Mines Cross Country team traveled to Boulder, Colo., Saturday for the University of Colorado Invitational, a meet the Hardrockers have been competing in for 11 years. The race features all levels of competition, from NAIA, to NCAA Div. I and Div. II talent. In the women's race, the Lady Hardrockers finished 13th overall and ninth in the non Div. I Collegiate race. SDM tallied 229 points. "Considering the high altitude and the tougher competition, I thought we competed well, " said head coach Jerry Schafer. "The girls didn't let the tougher competition intimidate them. They just went out there and ran and put forth a good performance." The women's race, which was 3.8 miles, was won by Sara Vaughn, from the University of Colorado. She clocked a time of 21 minutes flat. Individually for the Lady Hardrockers, last week's DAC Runner of the Week freshman Kendra Crisman (Rapid City, S.D.) was Mines' top placer, finishing in 43rd place in a time of 24:19. "To have her place that high against NCAA Div. I and Div. II runners was excellent, " Schafer said. As for the other SDM women's runners, freshman Brittney Hovendes (Rapid City, S.D.) ran a solid race and took 68th clocking a time of 25:27, sophomore Samantha Diede (Huron, S.D.) took 99th with a mark of 27:39, junior Jessie Chretien (Rapid City, S.D.) had a time of 29:01 for 107th, freshman Kim Kerce (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished 111 with a time of 30:59 and freshman Molly Vukelich (Rapid City, S.D.) came in 114th in a time of 31:25. "Samantha showed a lot of improvement from the Dickinson meet 10 days prior. (Diede) beat some women she's had raced against before (that finished ahead of her), " Schafer said. "Jessie looked strong and Molly showed some improvement from the Dickinson Meet as well." On the men's side, the Hardrockers finished fifth in the college team standings and eighth overall. "Similar to the women, the SDM men didn't allow the tougher competition to intimidate them, " Schafer said. "We also packed incredibly well together." The men's race was won by Brent Vaughn of the University of Colorado in a time of 24:46. Junior Colton Reid (Colstrip, Mont.) was the top placer for the Hardrockers, finishing 53rd with a mark of 28.47. "Colton was under 29 minutes and only a handful of our (SDM) runners have ever broken that, " Schaffer added. Senior Kyle Kattke (Black Hawk, S.D.) was close behind, taking 59th in a time of 29:01, senior Rob Hahn (Sioux Falls (S.D.) also performed well with a 72nd-place finish in a time of 29:43, sophomore Marcus Moor (Kadoka, S.D.) was 77th with a mark of 29.59 and Lucas Fried took 89th with a time of 30:44. "Overall, I was pleased with what we got done, " Schafer said. "This was one of our better performances at this meet in 11 years." Next up the Hardrockers head to Spearfish for a small meet with Black Hills State. Volleyball The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team spent its second straight week on the road in North Dakota tangling in conference action against Dickinson State and Minot State. The Lady Hardrockers split the contests, falling to the Blue Hawks, 3-0, and then bouncing back to defeat the Lady Beavers, 3-0. In Dickinson, the Blue Hawks remained undefeated on the season (7-0 in DAC) as they defeated SDM, 30-26, 30-20, 30-23. And despite DSU's perfect record, the Hardrockers did not back down from the challenge. "I think we showed up to play, " said Hardrocker volleyball head coach Beth Honaker. "Game I was by far our best effort (against Dickinson). Unfortunately that didn't continue into games II and III." Honaker added that Dickinson was the best team that the Hardrockers had faced this year. The Blue Hawks have won the conference title for the past six years and are ranked in the region as well as the nation. Honaker said what makes them so good is that opponents never know where the attack is coming from. "They aren't predictable, " Honaker said. "Even if you know where the set is going to go or who's coming from the back row, they are able to make adjustments. Katelynn Stiefel (DSU's setter) does a good job of isolating hitters." Individually for South Dakota Mines, junior Ashley Kauffman (Fort Morgan, Colo.) paced the offense, going 24-24 on the attack with nine kills. She also had 11 digs in the match. "Ashley hit very well against Dickinson, " Honaker said. "We have switched some things around in serve receive and she is excelling in it." Both Jennie Malone (senior from Rapid City, S.D.) and Stephanie Carpio (junior from Yuma, Colo.) added eight kills on the nigh. Junior Tessa Howe (Omaha, Neb.) had 36 assists in the match while junior libero Jenny Hiykel (Omaha, Neb.) contributed with 20 digs. The Lady ‘Rockers turned things around Saturday against Minot, defeating the Beavers, 30-16, 30-20, 30-24. "Our girls redeemed themselves very well, " Honaker added. Individually for the Hardrockers, junior Alena Ori (Kalispell, Mont.) and sophomore Katherine Hanson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) led the offensive charge as each were credited with nine kills, while Kauffman added eight and Malone had seven. Hiykel had 21 digs and two aces and Howe again had a stellar performance with 33 assists and an ace on the night. On top of that, Howe was named Dakota Athletic Conference Setter of the Week for her efforts over the last two outings. "Tessa is a great setter, " Honaker said. "There are a lot of great setters in our conference that she has to compete with. I am glad that she is finally getting credit for her efforts and this should give her incentive and push her a little harder." The Hardrockers record improves to 15-3 overall and 4-3 in the DAC. SDM has the weekend off and will next see action when they host Black Hills State Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. Football Unfortunately for the South Dakota School of Mines football team, they were unable to get out of ‘M' Days with a ‘W'. The Hardrockers fell to the Minot State Beavers, 17-10, in a DAC matchup this past Saturday on Dunham Field at O'Harra Stadium in Rapid City. After Minot State's Nick Banks scored a touchdown in the first quarter, the Hardrockers were able to answer with a 25-yard field goal from SDM freshman Justin Whalin (Rapid City, S.D.). Banks was then able to add another score for the Beavers toward the end second quarter and a short time later the visitors made good on a 14-yard field goal to go up, 17-3. The Hardrockers came within a touchdown when freshman cornerback Dustin Meneley (Naples, Fla.) picked off a Minot pass in the end zone and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown with no time remaining on the clock. The Hardrockers went in the half down, 17-10. There was no scoring in the second half and that's the way the contest ended. Individually for the Hardrockers, senior Lukas Munsell (Mills, Wyo.) had 63 rushing yards and 15 passing yards. Junior Joshua Jones added 30 yards on the ground and 34 through the air. Sophomore Tony Ostheimer (Ranchester, Wyo.) led all receivers with four catches for 38 yards. In the passing game, sophomore Jason Beilstein (Lodi, Calif.) was 12-20 for 105 yards. Freshman Joe Sanchez also saw time at QB. The Gilbert, Ariz., native was 3-8 for 3 yards. Sanchez punted for a majority of the game as well. He had five punts for 168 yards. He averaged 33.6 yards, had a long of 44 and had one downed inside the 20. Senior Kyle Kurth (Pierre) came back from injury and had three punts for 106 yards. He also had one downed inside the 20 and had a long of 44 and an average of 35.3 yards a punt. Defensively, junior Tyrell Anderson (Green River, Wyo.) continues his excellent play as a SDM linebacker. He led all players with 18 tackles (eight solo) while teammate and fellow linebacker Zach Marcus had 15 tackles (three solo). Sophomore Brian Kemnitz also had a good game and was credited with another sack for the season (third on the year). The Hardrockers broke up seven passes in the game as Meneley was credited with two, Chad Westendorf (junior from Geddes, S.D.) had two, while Jarrod Luze (junior from White, S.D.), Wyatt Stangohr (freshman from Howard, S.D.) and Peter Guck (sophomore from Perham, Min.) all had one. Guck's came in the form of an interception that he returned 37 yards before being tackled. Next up, the Hardrocker face BHSU this weekend in Spearfish. |
