| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team was firing on all cylinders over the weekend posting two lopsided victories at the SD Mines Lady Hardrocker Classic at the King Center Friday and Saturday. The ‘Rockers played Johnson and Wales Friday evening followed by a bout with Northwest Washington on Saturday. In Friday's game, SDM team put quite a hurting on the Johnson and Wales Wildcats out of Denver Colo., hanging a 61-point loss on the team, 77-26. The Lady Hardrockers held JWU scoreless for 11 minutes and 59 seconds, as they jumped out to a 29-0 advantage. By the half, SD Mines widened the deficit to 37 points, outscoring the Colorado team, 43-9. The second half wasn't much better for the visitors as Mines had 44 markers to the Wildcats' 17. Contributing to the ‘Rocker drubbing, was the Wildcats' 36 turnovers on the night and their inability to sink a basket when given the opportunity. SD Mines was able to utilize its entire bench with a lot of the reserves playing a majority of the game. "It was fun to get everyone in, " said Hardrocker head coach Barb Felderman. "We were able to excel and improve on things we've been working on all season. Everyone really competed hard and that's what I like to see." The Hardrockers sank 35-76 from the field for 47 percent while Johnson and Wales converted on 12-48 for 25 percent. Rebounding favored the home team all night as well, bringing down 48 boards to the Wildcats 27. The Wildcats were led by Sarah Fitzpatrick who chipped in eight points and teammate Jamie Barrett contributed with seven. The Hardrockers saw four girls reach double figures. Sophomore Leah Sundby (Williston, N.D.), who scored 30 points against this team a year ago, led the charge Friday with a 20-point performance. Freshman Jerica Ihnen (Tea, S.D.) put up 14, junior Jessica Tsingine (Tuba City, Ariz.) added 13 and freshman Stephany Bjustrom (Algona, Iowa) put up 12 to pace SDM. Ihnen also had the most rebounds for SDM with seven. In the game Saturday, the ‘Rockers posted another lopsided victory, defeating the Northwest Washington Eagles, 93-66. Freshman Cayla DeGeorge pushed the ball up the court during play this past weekend against the Johnson and Wales Widcats at the King Center in Rapid City. The Hardrockers defeated JWU by 61 points in the SD Mines Hardrocker Classic. In Saturday's bout, the Eagles were able to hang with the Hardrockers for about half of the first period, but the ‘Rockers unleashed a barrage of scoring toward the end of the stanza and jumped out to a 15-point advantage at halftime, 43-28. The Eagles put up little resistance in the second half as the Hardrockers outscored the visitors, 50-38. Part of the problem was the absence of Northwest's top player, Dani Drivstuen, for a majority of the game. The 5-foot-8-inch junior guard was whistled with her third foul midway through the first half and was forced to the bench. In the second stanza she picked up a fourth foul early and again was sent to the sideline. She got a fifth foul with about 10 minutes remaining in play and was done for the night. She ended with just two points. In Friday's matchup against Black Hills State, she totaled 17 markers. South Dakota Mines on the other hand had an outstanding all around effort as five Hardrockers reached double figures. Senior guard Melanie Vedvei (Lake Preston, S.D.) paced the offensive onslaught with 18 points, followed closely by Bjustrom with 17. Ihnen had 15 markers, senior Amber DeWeerd (Rock Valley, Iowa) put up 14 and sophomore Bethany Holyoak (Moorcroft, Wyo.) ended the game with 11 points. It was a pretty unselfish game for SDM Mines as the team recorded 31 assists. Vedvei had eight on the night and Bjustrom and Tsingine both had five. Brittany Bowsher led the way for the Eagles with 20 points, Erika Hornyak had 17 and Chelsea Drivstuen put up 15. The Hardrockers improve to 4-1 on the season and will next see action Friday and Saturday at the Midland Lutheran Classic in Fremont, Neb. The Lady ‘Rockers take on Mid America Nazarene on Friday and Midland Lutheran College on Saturday. Football With the end of the SD Mines' football comes the post season awards. The Hardrockers earned two spots on the conference first team, one spot on the second team and three players named to the honorable mention list. Making the DAC first team defense was Hardrocker Tyrell Anderson. The junior linebacker from Green River Wyo., led the conference with tackles this season, recording 123 in 10 games played. Senior Lukas Munsell made the DAC first team at large. Munsell, an all purpose back from Mills, Wyo., played in every game over a four-year Jennie Malone Ashley Kauffman Jenny Hiykel Tessa Howe span for the Hardrockers. In that time he racked up 3, 422 all purpose yards. He had 993 rushing yards, 1, 175 receiving yards and amassed 966 yards on kick return and 288 on punt return. Not only that, Munsell was also honored as this year's most valuable senior in the conference. Making the second team was freshman Tom Lunzman. The freshman defensive back had a great first year. He finished fourth in the conference with five interceptions this season, returning one for a touchdown and racked up 139 INT yards in the process. Named to the honorable mention list were Hardrockers Ed Waliczek (freshman tight end), Colton Clark (senior defensive end) and Dustin Meneley (special teams). Volleyball The Lady Hardrockers finished up their season over the weekend, making an impressive run to the DAC Championship match against Dickinson State. The Blue Hawks won the bout, 3- 0, but non-the-less it capped off a very impressive year for the SDM netters and one of the best to date, finishing with a 23-6 overall record. "If you would have told me the first day of practice that we would have won 23 matches this season, I would have told said you would be wrong, " said Hardrocker volleyball head coach Beth Honaker. The Hardrockers reached the final four by dismantling Mayville State last week, 3-0, and then went on to face long time rival Black Hills State in the semifinal match. The Hardrockers defeated the Yellow Jackets, 3-1, and it marked the first time in 10 matches that the Hardrockers prevailed over BHSU. SDM defeated the Jackets, 20-30, 30-22, 30-27, 30-24. Hardrocker sophomore Katherine Hanson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) paced the offense in the match, collecting 14 kills and going 27-31 on the attack. Junior Ashley Kauffman (Fort Morgan, Colo.) also impressed with a 27-30 performance on the attack with 11 kills. Junior libero Jenny Hiykel (Omaha, Neb.) finished with 23 digs for the match and junior setter Tessa Howe (Omaha, Neb.) had 44 assists. In the championship bout, the Blue Hawks won the match, 30-19, 30-23, 30-16. Rapid City senior Jennie Malone led the way for the Hardrockers with eight kills and was 20-26 on the attack. Hiykel came up with 25 digs and Howe had 20 assists in the game. After the championship match, the DAC All Conference teams were announce with SDM placing one on the first team and three on the second team. Hiykel earned the libero position on the first team and also earned the DAC Libero of the Year honor. It was well deserved as the 5-foot-1-inch junior had earned the DAC weekly libero honor six times this season as well as earning three NAIA Region III weekly honors and one NAIA national award. Hiykel ended the year tallying 753 digs and averaging just over seven a game. "She is well deserving of the award, " Honaker said. "That position is designed for just a person like Hiykel. We did a great job for us this year and we are going to need her even more next year. Making the DAC second team were Malone, Howe and Kauffman. Malone made it as a right side hitter, finishing the year with 332 kills on the season. Howe was named to the team as a setter with 1, 151 assists on the year and Kauffman made it as an outside hitter with 331 total kills. "I am pleased with all the selections and votes, " Honaker said. "It is nice to see that Jennie Malone is being recognized for the athlete that she is. And Ashley and Tessa should be right up at the top for us next year as well." |
