TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team posted another lopsided victory Saturday night, defeating the Northwest Washington Eagles, 93-66, during the SD Mines Lady Hardrocker Classic at the King Center in Rapid City. Over the four period of action for the home team, they outscored their opponents, 180-92. In Saturday's bout, the Eagles were able to hang with the Hardrockers for about half of the first period, but the home team unleashed a barrage of points toward the end of the half and jumped out to a 15-point advantage at halftime, 4328. The Eagles put up little resistance in the second half as the Hardrockers outscored the visitors, 50-38. Part of the problem was the absence of Northwest's top player, Dani Drivstuen, for a majority of the game. The 5-foot-8-inch junior guard was whistled with her third foul midway through the first half and was forced to the bench. In the second stanza she picked up a fourth foul early and again was sent to the sideline. She got a fifth foul with about 10 minutes remaining in play and was done for the night. She ended with just two points. In Friday's matchup against Black Hills State, she totaled 17 markers. South Dakota Mines on the other hand had an outstanding all around effort as five Hardrockers reached double figures. Senior guard Melanie Vedvei paced the offensive onslaught with 18 points, followed closely by freshman guard Stephany Bjustrom with 17. Freshman Jerika Ihnen had 15 markers, senior Amber DeWeerd put up 14 and sophomore Bethany Holyoak ended the game with 11 points. It was a very unselfish game for SDM Mines as the team recorded 31 assists. Vedvei had eight on the night and Bjustrom and junior Jessica Tsingine both had five. Brittany Bowsher led the way for the Eagles with 20 points, Erika Hornyak had 17 and Chelsea Drivstuen put up 15. The Hardrockers improve to 4-1 on the season and will next see action Friday and Saturday at the Midland Lutheran Classic in Fremont, Neb. The Lady ‘Rockers take on Mid America Nazarene on Friday and Midland Lutheran College on Saturday.
