| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines Rapid City --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team put quite a hurting on the Johnson and Wales University out of Denver, Colo., hanging a 61-point loss on the Wildcats, 77-26, to open the SD Mines Lady Hardrocker Classic Friday at the King Center in Rapid City. The Lady Hardrockers held JWU scoreless for 11 minutes and 59 seconds, as they jumped out to a 29-0 advantage. By the half, SD Mines widened the deficit to 37 points, outscoring the Colorado team, 43-9. The second half wasn't much better for the visitors as Mines had 44 markers to the Wildcats' 17. Contributing to the ‘Rocker drubbing, was the Wildcats' 36 turnovers on the night and their inability to sink a basket when given the opportunity. SD Mines was able to utilize its entire bench with a lot of the reserves playing a majority of the game. "It was fun to get everyone in, " said Hardrocker head coach Barb Felderman. "We were able to excel and improve on things we've been working on all season. Everyone really competed hard and that's what I like to see." The Hardrockers sank 35-76 from the field for 47 percent while Johnson and Wales converted on 12-48 for 25 percent. Rebounding favored the home team all night as well, bring down 48 boards to the Wildcats 27. The Wildcats were led by Sarah Fitzpatrick who chipped in eight points and teammate Jamie Barrett contributed with seven. The Hardrockers saw four girls reach double figures. Sophomore Leah Sundby, who scored 30 points against this team a year ago, led the charge Friday with a 20-point performance. Freshman Jeria Ihnen put up 14, junior Jessica Tsingine added 13 and freshman Stephany Bjustrom put up 12 to pace SDM. Ihnen also had the most rebounds for SDM with seven. With the win, the Hardrockers improve to 3-1 on the season and will take on Northwestern Washington University today in a 5 p.m. tip-off. |
