TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- South Dakota School of Mines senior hurdler Tyler Flattum saw his collegian season come to a close Friday after running in his final 110-meter hurdle race at the NAIA National Outdoor Championships in Edwardsville, Ill. Flattum, an Industrial Engineering major from Bristol, S.D., advanced his way to the semifinals Friday and ended with a time of 14.72 seconds. That time was not fast enough to advance him to the finals. "Tyler ran well and he was in the fast heat, " said Hardrocker assistant track coach Beth Honaker from Illinois Friday. "His time was the third fastest for him this season. Tyler is a little upset but he did what he was supposed to do in the race." Also in Flattum's heat was the 2007 event winner, Lamar Baskin from Oklahoma Baptist. Baskin's was crowned the champion last year after clocking a 14.32 in the finals. He had already bettered that time in Friday's semifinals when he posted a 14.22 to win the heat. "It was a really competitive field in the 110 hurdle event this year, " Honaker said. "To make it this far says a lot for Tyler." Flattum made it to the semifinals by having one of the Top 16 times in the prelims ran Thursday. He clocked a 15.26 to move on. During the regular season, Flattum won most of the hurdle events he was entered in and also took the Dakota Athletic event title. The Hardrockers' other national entrant, Chandler Caldwell is scheduled to compete in the pole vault event Saturday at 12 p.m. (MST).
