Transcript2 Hardrockers compete at NAIA Meet By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines track and field team will be sending two athletes to the NAIA National Outdoor Championships which start Thursday in St. Louis, . MO. Seniors Chandler Caldwell and Tyler Flattum will be making a return trip as both ‘Rockers competed in the national meet a year ago in Fresno, Calif. Both thinclads also participated in the NAIA National Indoor Meet earlier this season in Johnson City, Tenn. Caldwell, a Metallurgical Engineering major from Thornton. Colo., will be competing in the pole vault event. Caldwell is currently ranked sixth in the nation in that event. He has a season-best height of 16-feet-0-inches, which he earned last weekend at the Dickinson Last Chance Meet in North Dakota. Leading the nation in the pole vault is South Nazarene senior Adam Ergenbright who has the top height in the event at 16-2.75. Caldwell has breached the 16-foot barrier during the indoor national meet in March which netted him third place and All American honors. Flattum, an Industrial Engineering major from Bristol, S.D., is currently ranked 16th in the 110-meter hurdles. His best time of the season was posted at 14.85 seconds, which he clocked at the Hardrockers' home meet at the end of March. Lamar Baskin, a senior from Oklahoma Baptist has the fastest time in the hurdles event with a mark of 14.16. During the NAIA Indoor Meet, Flattum advanced to the semifinals where he was just edged out to make the final race Flattum's first hurdle trial is set for Thursday afternoon (1:40 p.m. MST) and he will then have the opportunity to advance to the semifinals and finals on Friday. Caldwell will vault Saturday at 1 p.m.
