| Transcript | Proven California QB joins Hardrocker ranks By Brad Blume Sports Information Director RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines football program has announced the signing of Nick Russell, a talented quarterback from San Diego, Calif. Russell will join the Hardrockers for the 2008 campaign. "Nick Russell is a great sign for us, " said Hardrocker football head coach Dan Kratzer. "Nick will compete for playing time at the quarterback position bringing with him strong credentials and an outstanding leadership record." Russell played for the Cathedral Catholic High School Dons in San Diego where he helped lead his team to a California Interscholastic Federation Division III Championship. He was also named MVP of the CIF Playoffs, was the Dons' 2007 team MVP, earned the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar-Leader-Athlete Award for the 2007-08 year, named to the All CIF 2007 Team, was a All Eastern League Team selection for 2007 and earned a host of other local honors. "Having led his Cathedral Catholic team to the California Regional Championship in san Diego, his accolades are certainly impressive, " Kratzer said. "Although small in statue (5-foot-10-inches, 215 pounds) he is big in heart and ability." During his senior year, Russell finished completing 111 of 189 passes, threw for 1, 923 yards, had 23 touchdown passes and just four interceptions. "A 59 percentage completion rate is outstanding, " Kratzer added. "60 percent is our target here at Mines. One additional key statistic is Nick threw for 23 TD's with only four interceptions --- a ratio every coach likes --- the likelihood of a completion over an interception is 98 percent." Russell is just as smart off the field as he is on, earning a 3.51 GPA. "We look forward to having him in our program and to watch his progress as summer camp progresses this coming fall, " Kratzer said. Skilled receiver added to 'Rocker roster By Brad Blume Sports Information Director RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines football program along with Hardrocker head coach Dan Kratzer are pleased to announce the signing of new recruit Jonathan Tristao for the 2008 season. Tristao is a 6-foot-3-inch 230 pound wide receiver from Hilmar High School in Hilmar, Calif., with deceptive speed and an outstanding athletic ability to be a playmaker for the Hardrocker squad. "Jonathan Tristao is an outstanding recruit for this program, " Kratzer said. "He has the size, speed and skills to be a contributor to our program right away." Tristao has been clocked running the 40-yard dash at 4.75 seconds, can bench 350 pounds, can squat 435 pounds and has a vertical jump of 26.8 inches. His scholastic statistics are just as impressive, boasting a GPA of 4.1. "Jon has excellent speed for a man of 235 pounds as well as excellent hands, " Kratzer said. "With a 4.1 GPA and planning to major in civil engineering, Jon is certainly an outstanding fit for Mines --- and Mines is certainly an outstanding fit for him." After his senior season, Tristao earned first team all league, second team all district, was three-year member of the California Scholarship Federation as well as a three-year honor roll member. Tristao averaged 6.25 yards per carry his senior year and averaged 17.17 yards per reception. "I am looking forward to working with Jon and expect him to be an outstanding receiver in this program, " Kratzer said. Hardrockers add Belle Fourche running back to 2008 roster By Brad Blume Sports Information Director RAPID CITY --- South Dakota School of Mines head football coach Dan Kratzer is pleased to announce the addition of local standout Colen Kling to the Hardrocker football 2008 roster. Kling is a 6-foot-2-inch 230 pound multi-sport athlete from Belle Fourche, playing the full back position in football, is a powerful sprinter on the Broncs' track team and played hoops for the BFHS for past two seasons as well. "Colen is another great sign for us here at Mines, " Kratzer said. "He's local recruit that has outstanding physical credentials to come in and help our running game without losing a stride. Colen runs the 100-meter and 200-meter dash in track and is a member of the 4x100 relay team. At 6-2 and 230 pounds --- that's not the norm." Competing for the Broncs, Kling has earned All State honorable mention as a full back for two straight years, been named to the BHC All Conference Team twice and earned the South Dakota All State Team Player Award as a fullback. Off the field, Kling finished high school with a 3.72 GPA, scored high on his ACT's and is a member of the National Honor Society. "An outstanding student with a 3.72 GPA, Colen will be able to team up with long-time friend and older brother Clint, who signed with us out of Sierra Junior College in Rocklin, Calif., " Kratzer said. "Although Colen is smaller of the two, his 230 pounds can run with the football. He has been a three-sport letterman at Belle Fourche High School and will be a great asset to our program here at Mines." Colen's brother Clint signed with the Hardrockers back in March with a wealth of experience playing both offensive and defensive line. For SDM his talents will be focused mainly on the defensive side of the ball. "Colen, like his brother Clint, is a young man of great character and will be an excellent role model for the youngsters in our NFL flag football program which is directed each year by our players." Kratzer added that having a pair of brothers on the Hardrocker team with the talent they both possess will make for interesting things to come. "I suspect that there will be a lot more to talk about with the Kling brothers over the next few seasons, the coach added. "I am very excited that Colen has chosen us for his college home." Lady ‘Rockers ink versatile guard from Arizona By Brad Blume Sports Information Director RAPID CITY --- South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team along with head coach Barb Felderman are pleased to announce to signing of new recruit Ariel Granillo to the SDM program for the 2008-09 season. Granillo comes from Chandler Ariz., and is looking to fill a guard slot for the Lady Hardrockers. Playing for the Chandler Lady Wolves, Granillo helped her team become the Arizona 5A state runners-up. In her four years on the hoops team at Chandler, the Wolves had an impressive win-loss record of 91-33 and had been to the state tournament all four years also. "Ariel is quick, can penetrate both directions and is able to finish. She can run either the one-guard or two-guard positions and can nail the three, " Felderman said. "She is a spirited player and takes pride on playing tough defense. After her senior season, Granillo was named the Arizona All State Second Team and was also a member of the Arizona South West All Star squad and earned Fiesta First Team All Region Honors as well. "There were many coaches after her, but she wanted engineering, " Felderman said. "She was like finding a needle in a haystack. After I began recruiting her I learned that some of her relatives had gone to school here and had a great experience." The Hardrockers will be in need of a versatile guard after losing three very talented athletes to graduation this spring in Melanie Vedvei, Amber Deweerd and Jennie Malone. Felderman added that Granillo's style of play fits into the system in place at the SD School of Mines. "Ariel loves basketball, " the head coach said. "She has a passion for the game and will bring energy to the court. She is also just a great person and I am excited to have her." The Lady Hardrockers season starts when they play host to the GPAC/DAC Challenge Oct. 31 and Nov.1 at the King Center in Rapid City. |
