TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines football program has announced the signing of Nick Russell, a talented quarterback from San Diego, Calif. Russell will join the Hardrockers for the 2008 campaign. "Nick Russell is a great sign for us, " said Hardrocker football head coach Dan Kratzer. "Nick will compete for playing time at the quarterback position bringing with him strong credentials and an outstanding leadership record." Russell played for the Cathedral Catholic High School Dons in San Diego where he helped lead his team to a California Interscholastic Federation Division III Championship. He was also named MVP of the CIF Playoffs, was the Dons' 2007 team MVP, earned the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar-Leader-Athlete Award for the 2007-08 year, named to the All CIF 2007 Team, was a All Eastern League Team selection for 2007 and earned a host of other local honors. "Having led his Cathedral Catholic team to the California Regional Championship in San Diego, his accolades are certainly impressive, " Kratzer said. "Although small in statue (5-foot-10-inches, 215 pounds) he is big in heart and ability." During his senior year, Russell finished completing 111 of 189 passes, threw for 1, 923 yards, had 23 touchdown passes and just four interceptions. "A 59 percentage completion rate is outstanding, " Kratzer added. "60 percent is our target here at Mines. One additional key statistic is Nick threw for 23 TD's with only four interceptions --- a ratio every coach likes --- the likelihood of a completion over an interception is 98 percent." Russell is just as smart off the field as he is on, earning a 3.51 GPA in high school and scoring a 1660 on his SAT's. "We look forward to having him in our program and to watch his progress as summer camp progresses this coming fall, " Kratzer said.
