TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines Women's Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team finished its last regular season trip to North Dakota this past weekend where the Lady Hardrockers split a pair of Dakota Athletic Conference games. The ‘Rockers came up short in Friday's contest as the Jamestown Jimmies defeated SDM, 87-71, but the Mines women bounced back on Saturday, taking down the Valley City Vikings, 83-67. Against Jamestown, All American standout Melanie Vedvei made her first return to the hard wood for the first time since injuring her knee about a month ago. The senior from Lake Preston, S.D., saw limited action as she was testing out her agility and stability of her leg. The Jimmies poured it on the Hardrockers, jumping out to a 19-point advantage at the half, 49-30, which proved to be the difference in the contest. Jamestown was also very accurate in their perimeter game, shooting 59 percent from behind the arc and cashing in for 10 of 17 three-pointers. Senior Jennie Malone (Rapid City, S.D.) paced the Lady ‘Rockers with 20 points while freshman Loryn Schuetzle (Pierre, S.D.) dropped in 18, sophomore Bethany Holyoak (Moorcroft, Wyo.) added 15 and freshman Jerika Ihnen (Tea, S.D.) contributed with 10. In Saturday's game, both teams butted heads in the first half with SDM taking a one-point edge, 33-32, but the visitors surged in the second stanza, outscoring Valley City, 50-35, for a well deserved victory. A 21-24 showing from the free throw line also aided in the outcome for SD Mines. Holyoak had the most points on the night for the Hardrockers with 20 and also came down with nine rebounds to lead the ‘Rockers, while Ihnen had 18, Malone put up 16 and also recorded seven steals and Schuetzle added nine markers.
