| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines Women's Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team finished its last regular season trip to North Dakota this past weekend where the Lady Hardrockers split a pair of Dakota Athletic Conference games. The ‘Rockers came up short in Friday's contest as the Jamestown Jimmies defeated SDM, 87-71, but the Mines women bounced back on Saturday, taking down the Valley City Vikings, 83-67. Against Jamestown, All American standout Melanie Vedvei made her first return to the hard wood for the first time since injuring her knee about a month ago. The senior from Lake Preston, S.D., saw limited action as she was testing out her agility and stability of her leg. The Jimmies poured it on the Hardrockers, jumping out to a 19-point advantage at the half, 49-30, which proved to be the difference in the contest. Jamestown was also very accurate in their perimeter game, shooting 59 percent from behind the arc and cashing in for 10 of 17 three-pointers. Senior Jennie Malone (Rapid City, S.D.) paced the Lady ‘Rockers with 20 points while freshman Loryn Schuetzle (Pierre, S.D.) dropped in 18, sophomore Bethany Holyoak (Moorcroft, Wyo.) added 15 and freshman Jerika Ihnen (Tea, S.D.) contributed with 10. In Saturday's game, both teams butted heads in the first half with SDM taking a one-point edge, 33-32, but the visitors surged in the second stanza, outscoring Valley City, 50-35, for a well deserved victory. A 21-24 showing from the free throw line also aided in the outcome for SD Mines. Holyoak had the most points on the night for the Hardrockers with 20 and also came down with nine rebounds to lead the ‘Rockers, while Ihnen had 18, Malone put up 16 and also recorded seven steals and Schuetzle added nine markers. With the split the Lady Hardrockers overall record stands at 18-9 on the season and 6-7 in DAC action. Men's Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team had an extremely tough weekend schedule, playing two of the Dakota Athletic Conference best teams on the road where the Hardrockers came up short in both outings. Jamestown College defeated SDM, 83-73, Friday and then the Hardrockers came up short to Valley City, 80-67, in a game played Saturday. In Friday's bout, the ‘Rockers played very well over the first 20 minutes, matching the Jimmies shot for shot. The entered halftime with a 36-36 tie. Jamestown was able to slowly pull away in the second half, bettering the visitors by 10, 47-37. Both sided shot the ball very well. The Hardrockers shot 51 percent from the field converting 27 of 53 shot while JC put up 25-51 for 47 percent. The Jimmies also posted a 10-22 showing from the three-point line which aided in their win. Individually, freshman Michael Ross (Fort Worth , Texas) paced the Hardrockers with 15 points while junior Donny DeGooyer (Great Falls, Mont.) cashed in for 13 and sophomore Robbie Fedor (Monticello, Minn., ) contributed with nine. In Saturday's game, the Vikings pinned down SDM early, outscoring the visitors, 43-28 in the first half of play. Mines adjusted in the second period with a 39-point effort to Valley City's 37, but the first-half 16-point deficit was too much to overcome. The Vikings also posted a 27-29 showing from the free throw line, while the ‘Rockers converted just eight of 14. Junior Brandon Smith (Amenia, N.D.) and Fedor led the way for SDM with 13 points, while Ross dished in 11. After the weekend games, the Hardrockers overall record now stands at 7-20 and 4-9 in the conference. Indoor Track The South Dakota School of Mines indoor track and field team competed at the Jon Dalton Meet at the University of South Dakota this past Saturday in Vermillion, S.D. The event was very competitive with NCAA Div. I, Div. II and NAIA divisions all being represented. The Hardrockers made their mark in a number of events. SDM's Mark Wager had a lot of success in his races, placing fourth in two of the sprint events. The sophomore from Gettysburg, S.D., placed fourth in the 200-meter dash, clocking a time of 23.09 seconds and then ran to a fifth-place finish in the 400 dash with a mark of 51.34. Sophomore Colin Royer also competed in the same two races, taking 13th in the 200 (23.49) and 10th in the 400 (52.37). National qualifier Tyler Flattum (senior from Bristol, S.D.) had a strong day for the Hardrockers in the 60 high hurdles. In the prelims, Flattum finished in a time of 8.42 --- which was the fourth fastest time. That earned him a spot in the finals where he clocked a time of 8.43 which was good enough for sixth place. SDM's other national qualifier Chandler Caldwell earned fourth place in the pole vault, clearing a height of 15-feet-0-inches. The ‘Rocker distance runners also did well in a highly competitive field Saturday. Senior Rob Hahn (Sioux Falls, S.D.) took 15th in the mile run (4:36.81) and then came back and finished 19th in the 800 run in a time of 2:07.87. Sophomore Marcus Moor (Kadoka, S.D.) also ran well, taking 32nd in the 3, 000 with a time of 9:41.21 which was a personal best mark for the thinclad. On the women's side, junior Ashley Stewart put forth a good performance, tying for ninth in the high jump after clearing 5-1. "She was very close to a provisional mark, having some good attempts at the next height --- 5-3, " said Hardrocker head coach Jerry Schafer. The Lady Hardrocker distance runners also did well all running comparable times in the mile. Freshman Brittney Hovdenes (Rapid City, S.D.) had the fastest time at 5:52.72 for 16th place. Freshman Kendra Crisman (Rapid City, S.D.) was a spot back in 17th with a 5:53.33 and junior Jessie Chreitien (Rapid City, S.D.) finished 22nd in a time of 6:23.00. The two freshman runners also raced in the 800 where Crisman finished 24th with a 2:41.42 and Hovdenes was very close behind in 25th in a time of 2:41.74. |
