| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines Indoor Track The South Dakota School of Mines indoor track team was able to qualify another athlete for the NAIA National Indoor Track Meet after the Chadron State Meet this past Saturday in Nebraska. Hardrocker Tyler Flattum (Bristol, S.D.) gave a tremendous effort to earn his automatic qualification during the 55-meter high hurdles men's race. Flattum qualified in the premils, clocking a time of 7.84 which was a tenth of a second faster than the automatic standard. He also tied a South Dakota School of Mines record with that time. Flattum went on to take third place in the finals Saturday with a mark of 7.90. The senior sprinter from Bristol, S.D., also placed in the 55 dash, taking seventh in a time of 6.83. SDM junior Matt Deardoff also had a stellar performance earning fourth place in the shot put after a personal best distance of 48-feet-4-inches. Sprinters Colin Royer (senior from Fort Pierre, S.D.) and Dustin Jordan (sophomore from Pierre, S.D.) both had strong showings in the 200 and 400 dashes. Royer placed seventh in the 200 (23.84) and fifth in the 400 (52.72) while Jordan was ninth in the 200 (24.46) and sixth in the 400 (53.78). Tyler Flattum ‘Rocker freshman Lucas Fried (Kadoka, Ak.) made a nice return to the indoor season after injury with an eighth-place showing in the mile run. He had a time of 4:54.61. Teammate Marcus Moor (sophomore from Kadoka, S.D.) was just a step behind, coming in ninth with a mark of 4:55.79. On the women's side, junior Ashley Stewart (Scotland, S.D.) earned sixth in the high jump after clearing 4-11 while Brittney Hovdenes (freshman from Rapid City, S.D.) and Jessie Chretien (junior from Rapid City, S.D.) both finished well in the mile run. Hovdenes clocked a 5:50 for fifth place while Chretien had a 6:32 for seventh. Hovdenes also placed in the 800, taking seventh with a time of 2:42. Men's Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team had to suffer through a pair of nail biters this past weekend during the final two home regular season games of the year. The Hardrockers split their Dakota Athletic Conference games, falling to Dakota State, 72-70, Friday followed by a four-point victory over Mayville State, 68-64, Saturday at the King Center. During Friday's contest a three-point shot that was made by Hardrocker freshman Michael Ross that appeared to have beat-the-buzzer, which would have won the game for the home team, but it was waved off by one of the referees officiating the game. That gave the Trojans a two-point victory, 72-70. "It's very disappointing, " said Hardrocker head coach Jason Henry. "One (referee) calls it good and the other one waves it off. I don't know if it was good or not --- but one of the refs thought it was." It was a back-and-forth battle between the two squads all night, with no one taking the advantage --- even late into the second half. Mines had a one-point edge at the half, 36-35, and the Trojans were three points better in the second stanza, 37-34. Dakota State seemed much improved over the last meeting the two teams had three weeks ago where the Hardrockers won that bout by 13 points. The Hardrockers were led by A.J. Trennepohl (freshman from Lubbock, Texas), who had 24 points in the game. "A.J. is a solid player. He didn't shoot that well (from the perimeter) but he got some good looks, " Henry said. "He was able to make some moves and work on his mid-game. He's starting to figure it all out." Ross (from Fort Worth, Texas) had a pretty exceptional night as well, despite not getting credit for the game-winning three-pointer, the freshman from Texas put up 17 markers and had four steals on the night. The loss is just one of many decided in the waning seconds of the game where it could have gone either way for the ‘Rockers. The SD Mines men found itself in yet another close one Saturday night against Mayville State. Unlike Friday night, where the Hardrockers came out on the short end of the stick, Saturday's contest favored the home team as SD Mines won the bout, 68-64, and improved their overall record to 7-18 on the season and 4-7 in the DAC. "It was a pretty intense game from the get go, " said Hardrocker head coach Jason Henry. "We have really resilient kids. That is something that coach (Hugh) Welsh told me when I first started here. They always seem to have the ability to bounce back." Saturday's game was too close to call until the very end. Mayville had a one-point edge at the half, 37-36, and then opened up a 10-point advantage midway through the second half. The Hardrockers used some impressive defense to hold the Comets in check while the offense went to work with a high-low game-plan to catch and overtake their opponents. "We did what we needed to do, Henry said. "It was more of a defensive effort than anything. We buckled down and (assistant) coach Eric Glenn had a good game plan going in for us." Ross iced the game with five seconds to go when he made good on two free throws to give the Hardrockers a four-point tilt and the eventual score. Ross led the home team in scoring with 16 points and was 8-8 from the free throw line. Teammate Robbie Fedor, a sophomore from Monticello, Minn., also had an excellent offensive effort, dropping in 14 points. "It was great to see Robbie do so well out there tonight, " Henry said. "He wants to do so well every night but he puts so much pressure on himself. He just kind of relaxed tonight and played his game." Freshmen Brent Cass (Hereford, Colo.) had 11 points in the contest and Trennepohl contributed with 10 markers. The Hardrockers have just three games remaining on the regular season --- all on the road. They travel to Jamestown College and Valley City next weekend and then finish up the year with a rivalry game at Black Hills State. Women's Basketball The Lady Hardrocker basketball team had a tough weekend at home, falling to a pair of Dakota Athletic Conference opponents in Dakota State and Mayville State. Friday, the SDM women came up short to the DSU Lady Trojans, 87-67. After injury has taken its toll on the Hardrocker roster sidelining two of the team's best players, SDM gave a veteran Dakota State squad all it could handle. The ‘Rockers kept the visitors in site for a majority of the game, trailing by nine at the half, 42-33, but DSU outscored SDM, 45-34 in the second half. Three Hardrockers scored in double figures. Sophomore Bethany Holyoak led the team with 16 points, despite having a late injury that took her out of the game when she collided head on with a Dakota State opponent. Freshmen Loryn Schuetzle (Pierre, S.D.) and Jerika Ihnen (Tea, S.D.) both contributed with 12 markers and senior Jennie Malone (Rapid City, S.D.) added nine points. In Saturday's bout the Hardrockers came out strong over the first 20 minutes outscoring Mayville, 32-24, but the Comets blazed in the second half lighting up 57 points to SDM's 35. The Comets won the bout, 81-67. Both Holyoak and Ihnen led the home team with 15 points, while Malone contributed with 14 and freshman Stephanie Bjustrom (Algona, Iowa) dropped in eight points. After the weekend, the Lady Hardrockers came away with a 17-8 overall record and 5-6 in conference play keeping them at fifth in the DAC standings. The Hardrockers finish up a North Dakota road trip this weekend against Jamestown College and Valley City State and then close out the regular season the following Wednesday vs. Black Hills State in Spearfish, S.D. Volleyball The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team along with second-year head coach Beth Honaker are pleased to announce the addition of Becky Keilholtz, for the 2008 volleyball season. The 5-foot-3-inch setter from Gwinn, Mich., will solidify the Hardrockers' roster. "Becky will add a lot of depth to the setter position, " Honaker said. "She's very technically sound and consistently distributes the ball as needed." Keilholtz had an impressive high school career for the Gwinn volleyball squad, leading her conference in assists for the past three years and she also set a school record for most assists in a game with 44. She was chosen first team all conference in 2006 and 2007, was all region in 2007 and was all state academic this past season as well. Keilholtz, who was coached by Honaker back in 2004 and 2005 in Gwinn, is happy to be reunited with her former coach and added that she chose to come to SD Mines because it is a different atmosphere from Michigan and it was an excellent opportunity for her. "It will be nice to work with Becky again and see the progress she's made over the past couple of years, " Honaker said. "I am looking forward to seeing her advance to the next level." Keilholtz plans to study interdisciplinary sciences while attending South Dakota School of Mines. Cross Country The South Dakota School of Mines cross country and track teams along with head coach Jerry Schafer are pleased to announce the signing of the first recruit for the 2008-09 season. Eben Nordahl of Molt, Mont., has signed a letter of intent to be part of the Hardrocker cross country team this coming fall and then compete for the SDM indoor and outdoor track team next spring. "We are looking forward to Eb joining our program in the fall, " Schafer said. "His ability and competitiveness will be a great addition to the ‘Rocker cross country and track and field teams." This past fall Nordahl competed for the Rapelje High School Renegade cross country squad and capped off the season by finishing fourth individually in the Montana Class C State Meet. |
