| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The weekend was packed full of Dakota Athletic Conference competition for the South Dakota School of Mines. The men's and women's basketball teams both participated in the conference playoffs while the Hardrocker track and field team competed with other DAC schools in the conference indoor meet. Men's Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team took the long dreaded road trip to Minot, N.D., Sunday for the first round of the Dakota Athletic Conference playoffs against Minot State, where the Comets were able to stave off a late Hardrocker rally and hold on for a 76-73 victory. Minot held a seven-point edge at the half, 39-32, but the Hardrockers bettered the home team, outscoring them, 41-37, in the second stanza. SDM shot 44 percent from the field, hitting 26 of 59 shots, while the Comets made 30 of 58 for 52 percent. Individually, junior Donny DeGooyer (Great Falls, Mont.) paced the ‘Rockers with an 18-point performance. Freshman Michael Ross (Fort Worth, Texas) put forth a strong effort with 12 points, freshman A.J. Trennepohl (Lubbock, Texas) cashed in for 11 points and sophomore Robbie Fedor (Monticello, Minn.) put up 10 for the cause and junior Brandon Smith (Amenia, N.D.) ended with nine markers. Photo by Brad Blume Women's basketball After a season plagued by injuries in which two seniors spent a large amount of time on the sidelines, the South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball season came to an end Sunday after falling to the Mayville State Lady Comets, 83-52, during the first round of the Dakota Athletic Conference Tournament in North Dakota. The Lady ‘Rockers end with an 18-11 overall record. In Sunday's bout, the Comets surged in the second half of play to end the Hardrockers' season. SDM kept Mayville in reach, trailing by just six at the half, 36-30. The Comets exploded in the second period, outscoring SD Mines, 47-22. The Comets were very accurate from the perimeter, cashing in on 13 of 24 three-point goals. The Hardrockers converted 2-12 in the contest and were 19-47 from the field for 40 percent. Mayville converted 24-56 from the field for 43 percent. Individually, sophomore Bethany Holyoak paced the Lady Hardrockers with a 17-point showing while fellow sophomore Nicole Martin contributed with 15 points. The SDM women will lose three very talented seniors in Vedvei, Jennie Malone and Amber DeWeerd. Indoor Track The South Dakota School of Mines track and field team earned two individual Dakota Athletic Conference event titles during the DAC meet this past Friday and Saturday in Spearfish. Seniors Chandler Caldwell (Thornton, Colo.) and Tyler Flattum (Bristol, S.D.) both earned top honors in their respective events. Caldwell, who has been having a lot of success in the pole vault, didn't disappoint Friday evening, clearing 15-feet-5.75 for the top spot while Flattum improved on his best time of the season in the 55-meter high hurdles winning the race in a time of 7.71 seconds. Both SDM thinclads are also the only two Hardrockers that earned automatic qualifications into the NAIA National Indoor Meet March 6-8 in Johnson City, Tenn. Flattum also competed in the 55 dash Saturday, taking eighth place with a time of 6.85. Mark Wager also had a good day for the ‘Rockers. The sophomore from Gettysburg was a tenth of a second from tying the school record in the 400 dash. Wager earned fourth place Saturday clocking a 50.99. The record still stands at 50.89. Wager also ran in the 200 dash, taking seventh with a time of 23.48. The distance runners did a great job of represented SDSM&T as well. Rob Hahn, a senior from Sioux Falls, S.D., who was a national cross country qualifier, finished seventh during the mile run Saturday with a time of 4:38.89. Freshman Lucas Fried (Kodiak, Alaska) captured a seventh-place finish in the 3, 000 run after clocking a time of 9:50.20 and sophomore Marcus Moor (Kadoka, S.D.) was seventh in the 5, 000 in a time of 17:09.80. The Hardrockers also competed in a couple of relay races. The team of Colin Royer (Ft. Pierre, S.D.), Dustin Jordan (Pierre, S.D.) Corbin Haller (Sydney, Neb.) and Wager raced to a fourth-place finish in the 4x400 relay after posting a time of 3:30.57 and then the team of Hahn, Moor, Fried and Haller impressed in the 4x800 finishing in a time of 8:26.14 for second place. Photo by Brad Blume In the throwing events, junior Matt Deardoff (Brandon, S.D.) had a strong showing, taking fourth in the shot put with a throw of 47-6.50 and freshman Everett Brill had an impressive outing in the weight throw, taking sixth after a toss of 42-3.25. On the women's side, the Lady Hardrockers competed in two relay events where they netted some impressive results. The team of Brittney Hovdenes (Rapid City, S.D.), Samantha Diede (Huron, S.D.), Jessie Chretien and Kendra Crisman (Rapid City, S.D.) gave a great effort and earned a second-place finish for their efforts in the 4x800 relay event, clocking a time of 10:44.33. In the 4x400 the Hardrocker team, made up of the same group, took sixth place with a mark of 4:50.86. Individually, Hovdenes competed in the mile, where she took seventh with a time of 5:49.96 and Crisman placed seventh in the 800 posting a 2:34. Junior Ashley Stewart (Scotland, S.D.) earned a share of fifth place in the high jump, clearing 4-11 and Katrina Donovan (sophomore from Martin, S.D.) settled for eighth place in the shot put after a throw of 35-0.25. With the conference meet over, the Hardrockers will send Flattum and Caldwell to the national meet and then prepare for the outdoor season which will start up at the end of March. |
