St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 3388 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( April 23, 1997) SDSM& T UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM ' 97 TO BE HELD APRIL 26/ FEATURED SPEAKER TO DISCUSS " FAMOUS MAD HATTERS" SDSM& T is hosting the 2nd Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium ' 97 this Saturday, April 26. The event, which is open to the public, will be held from 9: 00 a. m. to 2: 30 p. m. in the Classroom Building ( Rooms 204 and 206). Undergraduate students from South Dakota's universities will give oral and poster presentations on their latest research in the fields of Engineering, Science and Social Sciences. Cash awards will be given to the top presenters in each category and to the best overall presenter. Featured speaker will be Professor James O'Brien of Southwest Missouri State University, who will speak from 1: 30 - 2: 15 p. m. in Room 204E of the Classroom Building. His presentation, entitled " Famous Mad Hatters", is about famous people who suffered from mercury poisoning. Dr. O'Brien will describe the effects of mercury poisoning on the lives of six people the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland; King Charles II of England; Boston Corbett, a Union solider in the Civil War; Isaac Newton; German chemist Alfred Stock; and English chemist/ physicist Michael Faraday. Professor O'Brien also will discuss the health problems suffered by Clare Boothe Luce, U. S. Ambassador to Italy during Eisenhower's Presidency. In addition to the featured speaker, the public is invited to attend the undergraduate student oral presentations from 9: 15 a. m. to 11: 00 a. m. ( CB 204E) and view the poster presentations from 11: 00 a. m. until 1: 30 p. m. ( CB 206). An award ceremony will be held at 2: 15 p. m. in CB 204E following Dr. O'Brien's program.
