| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Directors South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines athletic programs were all on the road this week as the indoor track team traveled up to Spearfish for the Dave Little Invitational on the campus of Black Hills State while the men's and women's basketball squads made yet another journey to North Dakota, this time to face Dickinson State and Minot State. The Hardrocker football program signed its first recruit for the 2008 season as well. Indoor Track and Field The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's track teams didn't have far to go to compete this week, taking part in the Dave Little Meet at the Black Hills State Field House in Spearfish, just 45 miles up the interstate. The Hardrockers saw a lot of strong individual efforts pay off, resulting in several event placings. On the women's side, SDM distance runners Brittany Hovdenes (freshman from Rapid City, S.D.), Kendra Crisman (freshman from Rapid City, S.D.) and Jessica Chretien (junior from Rapid City, S.D.) were all double placers on Friday. Hovdenes and Chretien both ran in the mile and 800-meter events. Hovdenes took fifth in the mile in a time of 5 minutes 56.48 seconds and also ran to a fifth-place finish in the 800, clocking a 2:35.44. Chretien was seventh in the mile with a 6:23.05 and then grabbed eighth in the 800 in a time of 2:55.84. Crisman also ran well, taking third in both the 600 run and 1, 000 run. She clocked a time of 1:45.16 in the 600 and then had a time of 3:43.12 in the 1, 000. Photo by Brad Blume Lady ‘Rocker high jumper Ashley Stewart (junior from Scotland, S.D.) earned a share of second place in her event, clearing a height of 4-feet-10-inches. SDM sophomore Katrina Donovan (Martin, S.D.) also earned two placing, finishing eighth in both the shot put and the weight throw. In the shot put, Donovan had a throw of 34-9.5 and then marked up 31-4.75 in the weight throw. In the men's division, it was the Hardrocker sprinters that earned a majority of the hardware. Mines sophomore Mark Wager (Gettysburg, S.D.) had a stellar day, racing to a sixth-place finish in the 200 with a time of 23.43 and then came away with fifth place in the 400 after clocking a 51.27. ‘Rocker senior Tyler Flattum (Bristol, S.D.) also impressed during the meet, coming up just shy of automatically qualifying for the NAIA National Meet in the 55 high hurdles. Flattum's prelims time of 7.87 was the fastest of the day. He returned to run an 8.18 in the finals to earn him seventh place in the event. Mines highest placer was senior Chandler Caldwell (from Thornton, Colo.). Caldwell, who is already automatically qualified for the national meet, settled for second place on Friday after clearing 15-1. Junior Matt Deardoff represented Mines in the throwing events, taking fifth in the shot put after a throw of 45-0.5. The Hardrockers travel to Nebraska Saturday for the Chadron State Invitational. Women's Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team had a fairly up and down weekend splitting a pair of Dakota Athletic Conference games in North Dakota. The Hardrockers, ranked 25th this past week in the NAIA Top 25 poll, lost a heartbreaker to Dickinson State Friday night, 71-67, but then turned things around and upended Minot State, 72-70, Saturday. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and proved that the Hardrockers can still get the job done despite losing NAIA All American and two-time MVP Melanie Vedvei (senior from Lake Preston, S.D.). Vedvei is sidelined for an undetermined amount of time after suffering a knee injury last weekend at home against the Lady Beavers. SDM improve its record to 17-6 and currently own fifth place in the conference standings with a 5-4 mark. Against the Blue Hawks, Dickinson outscored Mines, 40-37, in the first half, and then kept that advantage in the second period with a 31-30 edge. It was a physical game as the two teams combined for 49 fouls. SDM converted 18-26 from the line while Dickinson made good on 23-32. Photo by Brad Blume Lady Hardrocker Loryn Schuetzle (Pierre, S.D.) led the team in scoring with 15 points, Bethany Holyoak (sophomore from Moorcroft, Wyo.) dropped in 14 and Jennie Malone (senior from Rapid City, S.D.) cashed in for 12 points and also was credited with five assists and five steals. In Saturday's game, the Hardrockers pushed the tempo of the game, outscoring the Beavers, 39-34 in the first half. Minot tried to swing the momentum in the second stanza, scoring 36 markers to SDM's 33, but the determination of the ‘Rockers was too much to contend with. Schuetzle had another productive night from the field, leading the team with 20 points, including a four of six performance from behind the arc. Holyoak was a nice complement under the basketball also dropping in 20 points and then pulled down 12 rebounds for a double-double. Sophomore Nicole Martin (Missoula, Mont.) chipped in 11 for the Hardrockers. The Hardrockers have their final two home games of the regular season this weekend, welcoming Dakota State Friday and Mayville State Saturday. Men's Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team had a rough road trip to North Dakota, dropping games to both Dickinson State and Minot State this past weekend. The Hardrockers came up short to the Blue Hawks, 71-57, and then were on the short end of the stick against the Beavers, 91-71. The defeats drop SDM's overall record to 6-17 and 3-6 in the Dakota Athletic Conference which currently puts them in a tie for fifth place. In Friday's matchup, things were pretty even over the first 20 minutes as the Hawks led by one at the half, 32-31. Photo by Brad One reason may have been the play at the foul line. The Hardrockers were 7-10 while Dickson earned twice as many points with an 18-22 performance. SDM freshman A.J. Trennepohl (Lubbock, Texas) continues to have a hot hand, as he led the team with 18 points (6-10 on three-point goals). Junior Donny DeGooyer (Great Falls, Mont.) dished in 13 and fellow junior Brandon Smith (Amenia, N.D.) added 10. The Hardrockers are back home this weekend with DAC matchups against Dakota State on Friday and Mayville State Saturday afternoon. Football The South Dakota School of Mines football program along with head coach Dan Kratzer are pleased to announce their first official signing of the 2008 season. The Hardrockers recently signed Todd Sherman of Colome, S.D., to join the SDM Mines team this coming fall as a freshman. Sherman is a 6-foot-5-inch, 220 pound offensive lineman that will solidify the Hardrocker front line and add depth at the same time. "When we saw Todd on film and were evaluating him we thought he moved real well, " said Kratzer. "He's got good feet and good hips and that is something you need on the offensive line. Sherman was apart of the 2007 Class 9B Colome Cowboys state championship football team and finished the year with an 11-1 overall record. While at South Dakota Mines, Sherman plans to study Civil Engineering. "Todd also plays basketball for Colome and is a just a well rounded athlete, " Kratzer said. The SD Mines football team kicks off the 2008 season with a home night game at O'Harra Stadium in Rapid City. The Hardrockers take on Haskell Indian Nations University Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. New South Dakota School of Mines football recruit Todd Sherman (center) recently signed a letter of intent to play football this fall for the Hardrockers in Rapid City.
