| Transcript | Rockers earn 2 event titles, numerous PB marks at CU Invite By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines BOULDER, Colo. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's track teams were able to brave the elements this past weekend to officially kick off the outdoor track season at the CU Invite in Boulder, Colo. The Hardrockers faired pretty well, earning two event titles and posted a number of personal best marks in other races. "Overall I thought our kids competed very well, " said Hardrocker head coach Jerry Schafer. "It really set us up to continue our progress this season." Hardrocker senior Chandler Caldwell transitioned well from his indoor performances in the pole vault. The NAIA indoor All American won the event on Saturday after clearing 15-feet-7-inches. That height has already automatically qualified him for the NAIA National Outdoor Meet May 22-24 in St. Louis, MO. Senior Chandler Caldwell competes in the pole vault during a meet in Spearfish last season. The Thornton, Colo., native automatically qualified for the NAIA National Outdoor tournament during a meet in Boulder, Colo., this past weekend. Photo by Brad Blume "Chandler hadn't vaulted since the NAIA (Indoor) Meet. He was a little rusty." Schafer said. "But I was pleased he got an (automatic qualification) after not vaulting for two weeks. We are looking for big things from Chandler during the outdoor season." SD Mines other indoor national qualifier also impressed at Saturday's meet as senior Tyler Flattum won the 110-meter high hurdles race. Flattum finished the finals with a mark of 15.02 seconds for a personal best time and provisionally qualified for the NAIA meet as well. "Tyler ran really well, " Schafer said. "He wasn't technically perfect running the high hurdlers, but he attacked them very well. We expect him to have times in the 14's in the near future." Flattum also competed in the 100 dash where he earned sixth place with a time of 11.32. The Hardrockers were well represented in other events as well. Junior Matt Deardoff finished fourth in the shot put after a throw of 46-3.25; sophomore Mark Wager raced to a seventh-place finish in the 200 dash (22.58)and then grabbed 12th in the 400 (50.26); junior Marc Baue earned eighth in the javelin after a personal best throw of 142-11; freshman Lucas Fried tried his hand at the 400 hurdles where he took ninth place with a time of 63.92; freshman Kendra Crisman earned eighth place in the women's 800 run, clocking a time of 2:37.57 and then took 11th in the 1, 500 run with a personal best time of 5:22.71; Fellow freshman Brittney Hovdenes also ran in the 1, 500 where she finished a spot back of Crisman in 12th, also with a personal best time of 5:23.45; Hovdenes, Kendra Kerce and Molly Vukelich set personal-best marks in the 3, 000 as well.
