| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's cross country and track teams recently hit the jackpot when they signed two-time Nevada state champ Matt Pike. Pike, who won the Nevada 3A state cross country championship in 2006 and 2007 as well as earned fifth in the 3, 200-meter run at the 2007 Nevada state track meet and who received fourth at the Nevada state wrestling tournament at 130 pounds, recently signed a letter of intent to rub for the SD Mines Hardrockers. "Matt is a very driven competitor and we are looking forward to his addition on the team, " said Hardrocker head cross country and track coach Jerry Schafer. "Matt knows what it takes to win and the hard work involved in getting to that level." Pike, from Winnemucca, Nev., competed for the Lowry High School cross country team. He had the quick time of 17 minutes and 37 seconds during his senior year to win the state meet and was three ticks faster in 2006 with a mark of 17:34 to finish first at that state meet as a junior. He also helped the Lowry cross country team to four consecutive state cross country team titles. For the Hardrocker track team, Schafer plans to race Pike in the distance events ( 1, 500 and 5, 000 races). Pike's time of 10:33 at the Nevada State Track Meet in 2007 netted him fifth place. He ran a similar time during his junior year and earned a third-place showing for his efforts. "Matt will be a great asset to the ‘Rocker cross country and track programs, " Schafer added. While attending school in Rapid City, Pike plans to study Civil Engineering. Matt's parents, Tim and Laura Pike, both attended and graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines as well. |
