TranscriptOffice of University Relations SDSM& T News 501 E. St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Tech Soccer Club competed for the first time in the 4th Annual National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association Open Club Soccer Championship November 20- 22 in Statesboro, Georgia. After more than 27 hours of continuous driving, the team arrived in Georgia and began play at 10: 00 am the next morning in its group of 4 teams ( out of the 16 competing). In Tech's bracket were the Univ. of Texas ( 50, 000 students), Colorado State Univ. ( 22, 000 students), and Georgia Southern Univ. ( 14, 500 students). Tech lost the first game 8- 0 against Texas ( the eventual # 2 team in the tournament after losing to Texas Tech 4- 1 in the final). Later that day Tech played Colorado State, losing 6- 1, with Techs goal scored by Aaron Asquith ( CE 4). Colorado State was rated # 4 in the tournament and lost in the quarter finals to tournament champion Texas Tech. Friday morning Tech defeated a good Georgia Southern team by a score of 4- 3. John Helsdon, faculty advisor and coach, states that Tech dominated play to a greater degree than indicated by the score. Tech's goals were scored by Asquith ( CE 4), Patrick Ng'ambi ( Mine 1), and Ernest Mwape ( Mine 1). Based on the tournament's point system, SD Tech finished 10th out of 16 teams. Although he is still confirming enrollment figures, Helsdon believes that Tech had the smallest school enrollment in the tournament. Students on the team roster were: Aaron K. Asquith; Shawn M. Carr; Aaron P. Dorsman; Reidar Gulla; Jason W. Heidenreich; Victor Mwaba; Ernest Mwape; Patrick Ng'ambi; Jed Padilla; Dusten R. Schad; Preston M. Schneider; Prabin K. Shrestha; Christian Sedlatschek; Matt Van Ravenhorst; and Andrew Wallinger.
