TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines and head cross country and track coach Jerry Schafer are pleased to announce the signing of new recruit Blake James of Friendswood, Texas, as the newest distance runner to the Hardrocker programs. James is an exceptional high school athlete, competing for the Friendswood High School Mustangs. He finished 58th in the 2007 Texas class 4A State Cross Country Championships and helped his team secure a sixth overall team finish. James' time was 17:08 for the 5-kilometer course. James' best track times of 2 minutes 01.7 seconds (800-meter) and 4:32.0 (1, 600) will serve him well at the college level and solidify him as a competitive ‘Rocker. "Blake is a quality distance runner and comes from a very competitive program in Texas, " said Hardrocker head cross country and track coach Jerry Schafer. "We know he will bring that competitiveness to our team as we build the program for the future." While attending the South Dakota School of Mines, James plans on studying Mechanical Engineering. James is the son of Scott and Karleen James of Friendswood, Texas (who are both former SDSM&T alumni and grandson of Ron and Maralyn Hoops of Groton, S.D. and Dean and Becky James of Canton, S.D.
