| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The Dakota Athletic Conference men's and women's golf season will pick back up this weekend as the South Dakota School of Mines will host the Hardrocker Invite Sunday and Monday at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City. It is the first of two spring tournaments before closing out the DAC portion of the golf schedule. The Hardrockers will welcome Jamestown College, Minot State, Dickinson State, the Black Hills State women's team, Chadron State and Mile City College to the two-day event which is predicted to have some of the nicest weather of the year. The tournament is a two-round format with the lowest individual and team scores being crowned as the champions. The DAC teams then will close out the season at the Black Hills State Invite the following week in Spearfish. Looking at the conference, Minot State is currently leading the men's standings with 10 points, followed by the Blue Hawks in second with nine, Jamestown has four points and the ‘Rockers are fourth with three. On the women's side, Dickinson has a commanding lead with 14 points, BHSU and Jamestown are tied for second with nine, Minot is fourth with six points and SDM has two points in fifth place. The Lady Hardrockers, who have a complete team for the second year in a row, are a tad green with little competitive tournament experience. Swing coach and former SDM standout Lisa Steever has been working with the Hardrocker team and along with SDM head coach Eric Glenn, are optimistic that the women will deliver strong performances. "We are just going to go out and try to shoot our personal bests. That's the main thing, " Glenn said. Jade Hermanson (senior from Mission), Kajada Stevens (senior from Benson, Minn.), Alya Brausen (freshman from Ipswitch) and Jodi Kaup (senior from Black Hawk) make up the team make up the Hardrocker women's squad. And even though they aren't in the Top 10 in the DAC standings, they should still finish the spring portion of the schedule strong. Anne Lagdell of BHSU and Whitney Stanley lead the women's standings with 65 points each. The SDM men's team has only four players as well. Brandon Eisenbraun (sophomore from Yankton), Ricky Clausen (freshman from Sturgis), Donny DeGooyer (junior from Great Falls, Mont.) and Sam Hermanson (junior from Rapid City) make up the squad. Eisenbraun is currently in the Top 10 conference standing in eighth place with 35 while Hermanson is right on the bubble in 11th with 26 points. Jordan Kelly of Minot leads the conference with 51.5 points. "Brandon Eisenbraun and Sam Hermanson need to have a good tournament, " Glenn said. "It's there home course and they need to go out and place high and solidify their spots in the top 10." They have already received help in moving up the list as Carter Hilwewich of Dickinson State, who is in third place, transferred to Minot over the winter break. Because of the transfer his spring scores won't be counted and he will fall down the leaderboard fairly fast. "When it's all said and done, he will be out of the mix, " Glenn added. Being a native of Rapid City, Hermanson has the best opportunity to improve his standings and breach the Top 10. "He basically needs to place in Top 10 in both tournaments, " Glenn said. "That's something he is capable of doing, especially on this course. He knows the Spearfish course pretty well too." The odds are certainly in his favor and Glenn stressed how being familiar with the course is a real bonus for the young golfer. "The home course is a big advantage, " Glenn said. "You're familiar with the course and you know how to play a line (on the green), you know where to hit a shot on the fairway and all sorts of stuff like that." As for Eisenbraun, Glenn said he needs to continue his consistent play and hopefully move up the DAC ranks as well. "He's got himself in a good position and he has to keep himself up their in the Top 10, " Glenn said. "I would like to see him get in the Top 5. That has to be a goal for him." Clausen, who is from Sturgis, is a little farther down the list in the DAC standings. He is also predicted to have a good spring season. "He could have been up there pretty close. He was starting to play fairly well (in the fall) but he had to miss a tournament last fall, " Glenn said. "He got a zero for that tournament. The talented young golfer has a chance to break into the Top 10 but it is a long shot. He has to do very well next two tournaments. Clausen is currently in 17th with 9.5 points. Being in the Top 10 and Top 5 are important to the golfers because the DAC's top 10 golfers advance to the NAIA Region III tournament with an opportunity to qualify for the NAIA national tournament. The DAC's Top 5 golfers are awarded with all conference honors. Where as the past couple of years, the Hardrockers have been in good contention for a conference crown, the 2007-08 version doesn't' have the numbers and appear to be a long shot for the DAC team title. "We are missing two guys to redshirts, Quentin Patterson and Brad Schaak this year, so team wise we aren't that strong." Sunday the meet starts at 12 p.m. with tee times while Monday's round will be a shot gun start beginning at 9 a.m. |
