| Transcript | SDM junior Matt Deardoff gains momentum as he whips around before launching the discus Friday duringtheBlackHillsStateFrostbiteInviteinSpearfish.PhotobyBradBlume ‘Rockers get dinged up at Frostbite Invite By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines SPEARFISH --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's track and field teams didn't suffer from severe coldness this past Friday at the Frostbite Invitational in Spearfish, S.D., but the Hardrockers' roster did feel a shiver as several thinclads were injured during and/or before the meet, hosted by Black Hills State. "We have several sprinters nursing injuries right now, " said Hardrocker track head coach Jerry Schafer. "Brittney Hovdenes (freshman from Rapid City, S.D.) got dinged up when she attempted to clear a barricade in the steeplechase and Katrina Donovan (sophomore from Martin, S.D.) couldn���t compete in the discus or shot put because she went down with an injury after the javelin. So from that standpoint, we didn't have a particularly good day." The Hardrockers motored on and still managed some impressive highlights despite being short handed in a number of events and even having to scratch in a couple others. Freshman Kendra Crisman (Rapid City, S.D.) had an excellent meet, winning the 800-meter run, finishing in a time of 2-minutes-29.15 seconds. The mark was a personal best for Crisman, who usually also runs the 1, 500. Friday's meet was the first time this outdoor season that the distance runner competed only in the 800. "We doubled her up in the first two meets of the season. She would run the 1, 500 first and then come back and compete in the 800, " Schafer said. "She is developing as a 1, 500 competitor but we worked her only in the 800 (Friday) for leg speed. She likes the 800 race more but in the long run the 1, 500 is a better race for her." SDM's junior Ashley Stewart (Scotland, S.D.) also had a fairly productive meet taking third in the high jump after clearing 5-feet-1-inch and then earning fourth in the discus after a throw of 119-9. Stewart's mark in the high jump matched her season best, while the distance in the discus was a personal best measurement. NAIA two-time All-American Chandler Caldwell continued his winning ways, taking the top spot in the pole vault. The senior from Thornton, Colo., took first Friday with a vault of 15-6. Caldwell has already qualified for the NAIA National Outdoor Meet which will take place May 22-24 in St. Louis, MO. The Hardrockers' other national qualifier, Tyler Flattum (senior from Bristol, S.D.) competed in both the 100 dash and the 110 high hurdles at the Frostbite Invite. He took second place in the 110 hurdles, clocking a time of 14.70. Flattum finished sixth in the 100 dash, posting a time of 11.37. "Tyler ran consistently but didn't improve (his times) in either race, " Schafer added. Fellow Hardrocker senior Rob Hahn (Sioux Falls, S.D.) also competed hard, earning second in the 1, 500 (4:18.83). "Rob was consistent in the 1, 500, " Schafer said. "His second-place finish wasn't a season best (time) but he still had a good solid run." Photo by Brad Blume Other Hardrocker highlights included: junior Jessie Chretien (Rapid City, S.D.) took fourth in the 1, 500 (6:29.24); Donovan earned third in the javelin (before being injured) with a throw of 91-8.5; Dustin Jordan (sophomore from Pierre, S.D.) took fifth in the 400 dash, clocking a 53.05; sophomore Marcus Moor (Kadoka, S.D.) took seventh 3, 000 steeplechase (11:03.88) and then competed in the 3, 000 run where he took 11th (10:07.51; Matt Deardoff had a solid outing in the shot put, taking third with a throw of 45-10 and then secured eighth in the discus with a toss of 125-11; and sophomore Marc Baue earned third in the javelin after a throw of 139-9. The Hardrockers will next travel to North Dakota this Friday to compete in the Blue Hawk Invitational at Dickinson State. |
