TranscriptSDM's Smith earns NAIA Scholar Athlete award By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The 2007-08 Division I & II Men's Basketball Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes have been announced with over 135 student-athletes recognized with this prestigious honor. South Dakota School of Mines junior Brandon Smith made the list. Smith is a Mechanical Engineering major from Amenia, N.D. He has been with the Hardrockers for four years, redshirting as a freshman and was a core component of the team this past season. Smith also set a season field goal percentage record, making good on 107 of 172 for 62 percent. "Brandon Smith has been the ideal student-athlete that we look for at the South Dakota School of Mines, " said Hardrocker men's basketball coach Jason Henry. "On the court he was an exceptional starter for our team and off the court he obviously has a high academic standard." In order to be a recipient of the NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete award, one must fulfill these requirements: the recipient must be a junior or above in academic standing; has been in attendance at the nominating institution a minimum of one full year of attendance; has a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 (on a 4.0 scale) at the time of nomination at the nominating institution; has been certified as eligible.
