| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY ‐‐‐ The South Dakota School of Mines athletic programs had another big weekend as the volleyball team held its home opener against Valley City State and Jamestown College, earning their first conference win of the season. The Hardrocker football team began conference play on the road in Madison and came away with a very impressive win. The SDM cross country squads were also in Madison clocking some fast times at the Dakota State Invite. Football MADISON, S.D. ‐‐‐The South Dakota School of Mines football team opened Dakota Athletic Conference play against the Dakota State Trojans this past Saturday in Madison, S.D. where the Hardrockers earned another victory and first conference win , with a 30‐18 tilt, pushing SDM's overall record to 3‐1 and 1‐0 in the DAC. The Hardrockers got things going early in Saturday's contest as freshman running back Jamie Dale (Alpine, Calif.) returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown. He wasn���t done there though as the Interdisciplinary Science major found the end zone three more times throughout the game. Dale finished the game with 118 yards rushing on 25 carries. That performance was good enough to earn his the DAC Offensive Player of the Week award. Dale racked up 121 yards on three kickoff returns and tallied 250 all‐purpose yards for the day. Dale also currently leads the conference in scoring with nine touchdowns for 56 points. The SD Mines defensive unit also earned some accolades from the conference as sophomore linebacker Tim Luchini was named the DAC Defensive Player of Week. The sophomore Mechanical Engineering major from Findlay, Ohio, led the Hardrockers with 13 tackles, two of which were for a loss, and also had an interception with a two yard‐return. Senior Chad Westendorf, a Mechanical Engineering major from Geddes, S.D., also had an outstanding performance with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery. Freshman quarterback Nick Russell, from San Diego, Calif., totaled 138 yards on the day, completing 9‐11 passes with one interception. He connected on a 74‐yard strike to Logan Smidt (a sophomore Civil Engineering major from Menno, S.D.) for the longest of the day as well as the season. Smidt ended the day with 91 receiving yards. Looking at the big picture, the Hardrockers are leading the DAC in scoring offense, putting up 46.8 points a game and also top the list passing defense allowing 128.8 yards through the air a game. SDM is second in scoring defense, allowing just 14.5 points a game and second in rushing offense, averaging 187.5 yards a game. In the NAIA, the ‘Rockers are listed in the Top 10 in eight different categories. SDM is rated third in punt return yards per attempt(19.8), fourth in scoring offense, sixth in opponents third down conversion (23.2), seventh in pass defense per game, ninth in both fourth down conversions (66.7) and opponent penalties (106), and 10th in scoring defense per game and kickoff return yards per attempt (26.1). The Hardrockers performance has not gone unnoticed by the rest of the NAIA as the SDM football team received votes for the Top 25 poll for the second time this season. The last time the Hardrocker football program was in the Top 25 was back in the early 1980's when the team snapped off 13 wins in a row. They climbed as high as third in the nation. After a prolonged road trip, the Hardrockers will finally be back in the friendly confines of O'Harra Stadium as SDM hosts Mayville State this Saturday for ‘M' Day. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. Volleyball The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team finally had a pair of home matches this past weekend as the Lady Hardrockers hosted Valley City State and Jamestown College this weekend at the King Center. The ‘Rockers looked sharp on sharp against the Lady Vikings, defeating them in three straight games, 25‐17, 25‐19, 25‐20, but then fell victim to the Jimmies in Saturday's bout, falling in three game, 25��22, 25‐17, 25��23. SD Mines also had a match earlier in the week defeating NCAA Div. II Chadron State in five games. SDM senior Ashley Kauffman (an Interdisciplinary Science major from Fort Morgan, Colo.) had a pretty good weekend and was rewarded for her efforts, earning DAC Hitter of the Week and received and also earned the DAC Player of the Week to boot. In the three matches she played this week, Kauffman was 135‐150 on the attack and recorded 40 kills. She also tallied 37 digs for the week. Fellow senior Jenny Hiykel continued to shine at the libero position as well, posting 71 digs in the three matches and also did well at the serve line, going 50‐53 with four aces. The ‘Rockers record now stands at 9����8 and 1‐3 in Dakota Athletic Conference play. The SDM netters hit the road this weekend. Their first stop is Madison, S.D., on Friday to square off with Dakota State and then they will head to North Dakota to go head‐to‐head with the Mayville State Comets. Cross Country The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's cross country teams travel to Madison, S.D., this past weekend for the Dakota State Invitational. The men's team earned third place at the meet in a pretty competitive field while the Lady Hardrocker team took fifth in their division. Individually, the women posted some pretty positive results. Sophomores Kendra Crisman (Interdisciplinary Science major from Rapid City, S.D.) and Brittney Hovdenes (an engineering major from Rapid City, S.D.) continue to impress and were running in the head pack for most of Saturday's race. Crisman nearly cracked the Top 10 finishing 11th in a time of 19 minutes 41.19 seconds. Hovdenes was close behind in 14th position in a time of 19:54.14. Senior Jessica Chretien (an Industrial Engineering major from Rapid City, S.D.) also competing , posting a time of 25:00.50 for 100th place and freshman Christie Quiett ended in 10th place with a time of 27:15. On the men's side, the Hardrockers top finisher was sophomore Lucas Fried (a sophomore Civil and Environmental Engineering major from Kodiak Ala.). He finished 18th with a mark of 27:22.22. Freshman Matt Pike (engineering major from Winnemucca, Nev.) was right behind in 19th position, clocking a 27:29.39. Freshman Eb Nordahl (a Mining Engineering major from Molt, Mont., ) came in 37th with a 28:29.15 while teammate Marcus Moor (a junior Electrical Engineering major from Kadoka, S.D.) was a spot off in 38th with a time of 28.32.25. Freshman Blake James (Mechanical Engineering major from Friendswood, Texas) took 46th in a time of 29:00.68 and Thomas Everett (freshman engineering major from Missoula, Mont.) closed out the day in 51st place with a time of 29:27.61. The ‘Rockers will next see action Oct. 11 at the Montana State University – Billing Invitational in Billings, Mont. |
