| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines The South Dakota School of Mines football team and the women's volleyball team were both on the road this past weekend, the football team played a heated game against longtime rival Black Hills State while the volleyball squad started Dakota Athletic Conference play in North Dakota. Football The Hardrocker football team may have come out on the wrong end of its game against rival Black Hills State, 33‐13, Saturday afternoon in Spearfish in a non‐conference bout, but they still played a very competitive game and led statistically in several categories for the game. The ‘Rockers had more first downs then the Yellow Jackets (24‐17), had more net yards passing (254‐171) hand more offensive plays (87‐60), more net yards (350‐337) and more third down conversions 8‐6). If not for a pair of interceptions returned for touchdowns, the outcome Saturday would have been a lot different. A couple of SD School of Mines records were broken Saturday as well. Freshman quarterback Nick Russell (San Diego, Calif.) set a new mark for passes completed with 32. That beat the old record that Jason Beilstein tied a year ago with Nick Wald at 28 passes. Speaking of Beilstein (junior from Lodi, Calif.), he tied another record in the game with pass receptions at 12 catches. That tied him with Matt Fettig. Russell finished the day, going 32‐51 with three interceptions and one touchdown. Beilstein led in receiving with 107 yards on 12 catches and a touchdown. Freshman running back Jamie Dale (Alpine, Calif.) tallied 45 rushing yards on 13 attempts. Beilstein scored on an 11‐yard strike from Russell in the fourth quarter. SDM's first touchdown came in the third quarter when Trevor Roberts (sophomore from Vancouver, Wash.) took the ball on a QB keeper and dove in from a yard out. Defensively, junior Tyrell Anderson (Green River, Wyo.) led Mines with six tackles (five solo) two for a loss. Freshman Eric Yeash (Louisville, Colo.) also had an impressive outing, recording one tackle and then picking off an interception for a 13‐yard return. Senior Chad Westendorf (Geddes, S.D.) tallied an impressive sack for an eight‐yard loss and junior Bruce Struckman also had one for a five‐yard loss. The Hardrockers are back on the road this weekend with a trip to Madison, S.D., to take on the Dakota State Trojans. SDM defeated Dakota State last season in Madison. Saturday's game marks the beginning of the conference schedule as the Hardrocker s go in with a 2‐1 overall record. Volleyball The Lady Hardrocker volleyball team started the Dakota Athletic Conference season this past weekend in North Dakota where they stumbled, losing matches to both Minot State and Dickinson State and dropping their overall record to 7‐7 for the season. The Hardrockers fell to the Lady Beavers, 21‐25, 25‐21, 25‐15, 25‐22, 25‐13. SDM missed the offensive attack of freshman outside hitter Madi Lane, who went down earlier in the week with a leg injury. It is not know when she might rejoin the team. Individually for the ‘Rocker netter, senior Ashley Kauffman (Fort Morgan, Colo.) led the team with 15 kills and was 49‐55 on the attack and also tallied 26 digs in the match. Fellow senior Jenny Hiykel continued to do her part on the defensive end, leading the team with 28 digs. Senior Renae Keppen (Dakota Dunes, S.D.) also proved to be formidable at the net with two solo blocks and three assisted. On Saturday, the Blue Hawks topped SDM, 24‐23, 24‐26, 22‐25, 25‐13. Again the Hardrockers had trouble finishing games down the stretch and couldn't really find a consistent offensive rhythm. Individually, Kauffman tallied nine kills for the match and was 49‐55 on the attack. Hiykel again paced the defense with 34 digs and junior Katherine Hanson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) contributed with 14 digs along with two blocks and three service aces. The "Rockers will finally have a home opener this weekend, hosting Valley City State on Friday followed by Jamestown College Saturday afternoon. Golf (story by Rapid City Journal) Dickinson State had the best golfer Monday at the Minot State Invitational at Souris Valley Golf Course and Minot Country Club in Minot, N.D. As for the top team, the Blue Hawks had to share that honor with the host team. Dickinson State and Minot State both carded team scores of 602 on Minot State's home course. Minot State led after the first round with a 296, but a 306 on the back nine knotted them up with Dickinson, which carded rounds of 300 and 302. South Dakota Mines was the third-place team with a 640, Minot State's second team had a 628 and Bismarck State had a 643. T.J. Poulsen, of Dickinson State, was the medallist with a 147. Teammate Tony Elliott, and Minot State's Carter Hilkewich and Jordan Kelly, each hit 149 strokes. Kyle Chan rounded out the top five with a 151. Stanley's outing was five strokes better than the nearest competition, Krista Lambrecht of Dickinson State. Black Hills State was led by Katelyn Lamb and A.J. Rolfson, who tied with the third-best score at 177. Also for the Yellow Jackets, Anne Langdell had a 184, Emily Chapman had a 197 and Tamara Haines, 201. For the Lady Hardrockers, Jodi Kaup (senior from Black Hawk) came with a 214, Ayla Brausen (sophomore from Ipswich) carded a 217, Steph Leber (senior from Dell Rapids, S.D.) put up a 226 and Jamie Lien (sophomore from Presho, S.D.) ended with a total of 271 strokes. |
