| Transcript | Good weekend for ‘Rocker Sports teams By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY ‐‐‐ The South Dakota School of Mines athletic teams were spread out far and wide this past weekend as the Hardrocker football team traveled to North Dakota, the Lady ‘Rocker volleyball squad made a trek to south central Iowa and the SDM cross country teams went all the way to Spearfish for their first meet of the season. Football ELLENDALE, N.D. ‐‐‐ The biggest story of the weekend for South Dakota Mines had to be the lopsided victory the Hardrocker football team earned over Trinity Bible College Saturday afternoon in Ellendale, N.D. SDM defeated the Lions, 70‐0. The Hardrockers dominated in every aspect of the game as the SDM defense held Trinity in check all day while the offense found the end zone 10 times in the game. "We were concerned going into the game. Trinity had played well the week before against Minnesota‐Morris. There defense didn't give up any touchdowns (in that game), " Hardrocker head coach Dan Kratzer said. "(During the Hardrocker game) it was raining. Rain is a great equalizer. But we played all three phases of the game again, we had very few penalties and those things kind of take care of the results." Jamie Dale SDM scored three times in the first quarter, the first when Dustin Meneley (sophomore Industrial Engineering major from Naples, Fla.) caught a pass from freshman quarterback Nick Russell (San Diego, Calif.) and sprinted 64 yards for a touchdown just 38 seconds into the game. Sophomore Tony Ostheimer (Environmental Engineering major from Ranchester, Wyo.) scored on a nine‐yard strike from Russell less than four minutes later for Mines' second score of the game. Freshman running back Jamie Dale (Sports Medicine major from Alpine, Calif.) then scored back‐to‐back TDs, from 28 and 29 yards out respectively. That was followed by a 10‐yard touchdown reception from Russell to junior tight end Jason Beilstein (Mechanical Engineering major from Lodi, Calif.) and then a 1���yard TD catch, again from Russell to sophomore Logan Smidt (Civil Engineering major from Menno, S.D.). Sophomore Dustin Rougeau (Civil Engineering major from Big Horn, Wyo.) followed with two appearances in the end zone, the first on a 17‐yard run and the second came from one yard out. Trevor Roberts (sophomore Civil Engineering major from Vancouver, Wash.) playing QB in the second half plunged into the end zone from a yard out. The scoring was capped off by freshman Tyler Barth (Mining Engineering major from Dickinson, N.D.) when he charged in for a nine‐yard score. Russell ended the day with 198 passing yards and made good on 13 of 19 passes with one interception and four touchdown passes. Add in the performance from the first game against Haskell University and Russell has eight TD passes in just two games. "Russell performed extremely well again for us, " Kratzer added. Dale led the ground attack with 115 yards on eight carries while backup quarterback Roberts tallied 90 yards on 11 carries. Beilstein led in reception, collecting four for 66 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, senior Chad Westendorf (a Mechanical Engineering major from Geddes, S.D.) led the Hardrockers in tackles, collecting four solo and three assisted, had one pass breakup and one tackle for a loss of a yard. For his efforts he was named the Dakota Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Chad Westendorf Freshman Dana Mellage (a Civil Engineering major from Auburn, Neb.) also had a good defensive performance with three solo tackles and two assisted. Freshman Eric Yeash (a Mining Engineering Major from Louisville, Colo.) and sophomore Tom Lunzman ( a Civil Engineering major from Gretna, Neb.) both recovered fumbles in the contest, junior Zach Marcus ( a Mining Engineering major from Olivia, Minn.) posted a sack for a loss of 13 yards and Meneley had an interception with 30 yards returned. Kratzer was pleased with his teams play both offensively and defensively, highlighting Meneley's contributions on both sides of the ball, the return of Colton Clark (senior Geological Engineering major from Worland, Wyo.) after an ankle injury in the first game, the play of Yeash as well as sophomore Joe Berke (a Mechanical Engineering major from Elwood, Neb.) who played the game with a broken hand. Looking at the team stats, the SDM offense tallied 22 first downs to Trinity's one. The Hardrockers had 348 yards rushing to TCB's eight and 204 yards net passing to the Lions 35. The total offensive yards was 552 for the ‘Rockers and 43 for the Lions. "Week after week our team has consistently put forth some good performances, " Kratzer said. "And that's what it takes to have a good ball club." The Hardrockers are in for a big test this weekend as they travel to Spearfish, S.D. to face the nationally ranked Black Hills State Yellow Jackets. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start at Lyle Hare Stadium. Volleyball LAMONI, IA ‐‐‐ The Lady Hardrocker volleyball team improved its overall record to 7‐5 after posting a 3‐1 mark at the Graceland University Volleyball Tournament in Lamoni, Iowa, after competing against some teams the SD School of Mines normally would not see. The Hardrockers had matches with the University of Michigan‐Dearborn, Indiana Wesleyan University, Mt. Mercy College and William Penn University. SDM fell to Indiana Wesleyan, 1‐3 to open the tournament and then rattled off three straight victories, defeating Dearborn, 3‐2, blanking Mt. Mercy, 3‐0 and then bettering William Penn, 3‐1. "We still have a long way to go, " Hardrocker head volleyball coach Beth Honaker said. "We are serving a lot tougher right now and that was what the difference was from the previous weekends." The Lady Hardrockers made good on 142‐178 serves on the weekend and tallied 18 aces in the process. And because the serve was so strong for SDM, that fed the defensive play at the net as the team notched 58 total blocks in four matches. "Our blocking is that much better due largely because of our serve, " Honaker added. SDM's Katherine Hanson (a junior Mechanical Engineering Major from Sioux Falls, S.D.) recorded the most blocks with 18. Katherine Hanson The play of the Hardrockers' two freshmen centers has improved by leaps and bounds according the Honaker. That also has had a direct affect on how well the team does. Both Becky Keilholtz (an Interdisciplinary Sciences major from Gwinn, Mich.) and Reanna Roberson (a Civil Engineering major from Windsor, Colo.) have spent the first 12 matches learning and developing what it takes to be a setter at the college level. Honaker said they have progressed quickly and her, and the team, feel confident heading into the conference portion of the schedule. "They are starting to come together really well, " Honaker said. "Each has had a weakness coming into the season. I am starting to see a change for the better in each of them. Becky's defense is much more aggressive now from the beginning of the season and Reanna's sets are much more consistent." Offensively for the weekend, senior Ashley Kauffman (an Interdisciplinary Science major from Fort Morgan, Colo.) had strong play at the net, recording 49 kills. Freshman Madi Lane (a Chemical Engineering major from Fort Collins, Colo.) also played well with 45 kills and Hanson tallied 34 for the tournament. But Honaker felt there is room for improvement. "Our hitting is the only thing we are struggling with right now, " the coach said. "We are not terminating the first ball like we should be." Becky Keilholtz Reanna Roberson Honaker added that once that is shored up, the Hardrockers will be ready for their mid‐season run. "I think as the year progresses, we will keep getting better and I am excited for conference play to start, " Honaker said. "The underclassmen have progressed enough to earn the respect from the upperclassmen." DAC play begins with SDM traveling to North Dakota for matches against Minot State and Dickinson State. The Rockers take on the Beavers Friday at 7 p.m. and then are hosted by the Blue Hawks Saturday evening with another 7 p.m. start time. Cross Country SPEARFISH, S.D. ‐‐‐The SD School of Mines cross country team performed as advertised to open the 2008 cross country season this past weekend at the Black Hills State Invitational at the Spearfish Canyon Country Club in Spearfish, S.D. The Hardrocker men took third as a team behind the nationally ranked Yellow Jackets (No. 2) and the Dickinson Blue Hawks (ranked 10th) respectively. "We ran well together, " said Hardrocker cross country head coach Jerry Schafer. "Our pack time was very good for that course and we came in third to nationally ranked teams." SD Mines was led by freshman runner Matt Pike (an engineering major from Winnemucca, Nev.) who finished the race in 12th place with a time of 21 minutes 29.47 seconds. "Pike had a great debut as a college runner and as our top runner, " Schafer said. "Matt's time was very comparable to our top runner's time last year during this race." Following Pike for SD Mines was sophomore Lucas Fried (a Civil and Environmental Engineering major from Kodiak, Ala.) who finished 15th and posted a time of 21:53.40. That mark was 17 seconds faster than the 2007 race on that course. Junior Marcus Moor (an Electrical Engineering major from Kadoka, S.D.) also improved his mark, finishing Saturday's race 20th in a time of 22:28.32 ‐‐‐ which was 45 seconds better from a year ago. Matt Pike "We were very pleased with Lucas and Marcus, " Shafer said. "They did a good job of leading the freshmen." The freshmen refer to Black James, Eben Nordahl and Thomas Everett. James (a Mechanical Engineering major from Friendswood, Texas) took 21st with a time of 22:29.43; Nordahl Mining Engineering major from Molt, Mont.) came in 26th clocking a 22:54.05 and Everett (an engineering major from Missoula, Mont.) rounded out the day in 31st with a mark of 23:10.83. With his harriers running in such a tight pack up toward the front of the race, Schafer feels good about the upcoming schedule and maybe even giving Dickinson a run for their money with that No. 10 national ranking. "We think we have a good shot of moving up and challenging Dickinson down the road, " Shafer said. "We know what we have to do to get us to that position." On the women's side Saturday, the ‘Rockers had just three entrants in the race, but it wasn't the quantity it was the quality that prevailed for SDM. Sophomore's Brittney Hovdenes and Kendra Crisman had strong races and brought home Top 10 finishes. Hovdenes (an engineering major from Rapid City, S.D.), who didn't even compete in the race last year, knocked out a seventh‐place finish on Saturday in a time of 16:57.04. Crisman was a spot back in eighth posting a 16:59.85 – a 19‐second improvement from last year. "Last year the Spearfish race was a lot later in the season, " Shafer said. "So we are pleased with where our women are at. It was wet (on the course) and some parts were not easy to run through." SDM's Jessie Chretien (junior Industrial Engineering major from Rapid City) took 45th in the race with a time of 21:03.34. Brittney Hovdenes Shafer said he expects to have a full team by the next few races and feels confident on how his women's team will perform. "It will be interesting to see how well we move up with the level of our improvement, " Shafer added. Next up, the teams travel to Madison on Sept. 27 for the Dakota State Invitational. |
